I have a clicking noise comoing from the left hand side of my engine as you look at it. It increase in speed with engine revs. It occurs on about 4 out of 5 start-ups and last for the duration of my journey. The oil levels are fine and the timing belt was changed 30,000 miles ago. Any ideas?

Oil not getting to the far end of the camshafts?

Sounds like you have a problem with the aux. belt or the timing belt is so slack, its hitting the covers. Check the aux belt for any breakup.

+Its getting close for a new cambelt and rollers anyway in my book but I dont think thats your problem. A slack cambelt will be an irregular noise, not a regular ticking. First guess is a leaking exhaust manifold gasket but that would be noticeable only under load, next, a loose sparkplug will make a regular tapping noise otherwise I'd suggest you have a failed hydraulic tappet if the noise is constant and commensurate with engine speed. Flushing probably wont help as because it doesnt disappear when hot there is no oil flowing through the tappet. Checking will be difficult but not impossible, you will be looking for a tappet with an obvious clearance whereas a sound tappet will be (just) contacting the camshaft with the valve fully closed.

You haven't used 20w/50 have you?;Ford hydraulic tappets and 20w/50 do not go together.
