My cat has just failed - '95 BMW 735. The car in fact has 2 cats - 481 miles each. The non-franchised garage can do the job for me but says he can only get standard parts. Does anyone know a cheaper solution (other than leave it until it drops off).
Also the garage say that the part comes a complete unit - the old cats need to be "sawn off" and the new ones fitted using sleaves (not welds as it is stainless steel). Sounds a bit odd to me - is this correct?

Srry I meant £481 each not miles

Are you sure this age of car needs working cats to pass the mot?
My folks have a K reg 106 that is effectively not tested.

J plate on needs a cat. This is a '95, so no option.
I think someone recommended www.fuelparts.co.uk/ as a source of aftermarket cats?
Also try europarts www.europarts.com or 020 8956 5000

Yes, anything post 93 needs pussies

Michael,
Why do you think your cats have failed?

The exhaust sounds like a bag of spanners - same noise as the when the cat failed on my Passat a few years ago. The noise is coming from the cat - sounds like whatever is inside has turned to lumps. Apart from the noise the car drives fine.

Fair enough Michael.
I may have been lucky but unless they've fallen apart internally I've not had one fail the MOT on any of the cars I look after. Just wanted to make sure you didn't just need the "how to get a marginal cat through the MOT" answer!

Maybe he has a little sand in his catylist?

I beg your pardon Alwyn. Let's hope I will as well if I get that far.
