My car only has one wheel balanced - rip
I was checking my tyre pressures on the xantia and just be chance i took of the trims and had a look to see if the weights were there an lo and behold only the offside front had a 5g weight, all others nothing there.

For a while i felt the car is not particularly stable at high-speed ie 70mph+ and recently noticed some vibration at 80mph. the tyres are avons.

Everything else (alignment, spheres, bushes etc all all fine)

So would this be 1) the cause of high speed instability and 2) vibration.

Did you check the inside of the other wheel rims for weights, its unusual for one wheel only to have them.and possibly the reason for vibration

yes i did look, nothing there, it was a while back the tyres were changed and i cant remember if only one had weights on, but as you say it seems strange this would be the case, they must have come off.

i will take it back for them to redo.

My car was fitted with Michelin XH1 when new, which were fitted with balance weights.

When I had 2 new tyres fitted, Goodyear NCT5, I questioned why the balancing hadn't been done. I was told that it had been done but no weights were necessary. I didn't believe this so they re-balanced the wheels/tyres in front of me and sure enough no weights were necessary.

My own theory is that this only happens with "top line" tyres, the cheaper down the range the more weights are needed to acheive balance.

I think 5g is the smallest weight I've seen so it may be that it was the only wheel needing one.
I'd guess your wheel trims weigh a lot more and unless they are fitted perfectly each time will have more of an affect.
