Ford Diesel - Problem Starting - bathtub tom
My '99 endura diesel died this morning. It's half full of fuel. It started perfectly OK but expired after a few hundred yards. I've checked the cambelt, and the camshaft's going round. It had a new cambelt kit fitted by a local indy 3 months ago. The instruments go to full scale deflection for a few seconds when I turn the ignition on, and again when I operate the starter.
I found some dodgy looking earth connections under the air filter, and cleaned them. That is removed, abraded and vaselined. I'm sure I've read something similar but can't find it when I search. The last time I tried to start it an O/D warning light flashed briefly - it's manual! Any ideas?

Hi,

Sounds like your battery could be on it's last legs or your alternator is not functioning. The full scale deflection of the instruments can be an indication of low or intermittant battery voltage and therefore you should test the battery and/or alternator to check if they are OK.

I don't think it's the battery, 'cos I've spent all day spinning the engine over on the starter (it is now starting to get a bit sluggish).

A man with a laptop parted me from thirty quid to tell me it's the injector pump controller (an integral part of the injector pump).
It looks like a one and a half grand job at a main dealer, or a possible repair costing about a grand overall. I'll update when I know.

Speak to a diesel specialist first-you'll find them in the YELLOW PAGES-either a Bosch one-if it's a Bosch pump or Lucas(Lucas/Cav/Rotodiesel).

Hi I had the same problem and have just replaced my pump, it pays to search scrap yards or try www.findapart.com they cost anything from 30 to 300 .

Not much help to you but my SIL had almost exactly the same problem a couple of months ago on his 98 Mondeo diesel.
It kept cutting out and the panel lights and instruments were doing the same as yours.
Went over to help him clear the earth connections as it was suggested on this site that earth connections were likely to be the cause although the Ford dealer was taling about it being the pump. When I got there he said it had behaved itself all day and we did nothing. Its been OK since.

Got the car back, and I'm twelve hundred quid lighter! Garage removed pump and sent it to specialist for repair, they charged a hundred quid to say internal mechanical damage precluded repair. New pump, refitting, ancillaries, VAT etc!!!
I didn't fancy trying myself, because cam belt replacement procedure needs to be followed, (haynes says 'Clavis gauge' needed to re-tension belt). The last cam belt I did was Maestro diesel, this looked more difficult. Reluctant to use second-hand pump, new only £350, and needs to be 'introduced' to ECU software.
This ends my love affair with diesels. I mostly used Shell/Texaco, and took it to the rev limiter for a few seconds whenever it was hot, and I had a clear road.
Next car looks like being Jap petrol. Almeras look cheap, comments?

We've got a 1 year old Almera (1.8 SE auto) which we are very happy with. Bought when 9 months old.
Nice to drive, comfortable, reasonably economical, plenty of power when needed. The 1.5 will be more economical, I guess, but lack the nice ooomf from the 1.8
