Just took delivery of new Passat 2.0 TDI PD 140 yesterday. After 2 miles of driving, filled up with diesel. Got home and detected strong smell of diesel. Later noted diesel dripping from under car. Called dealer who expressed surprise!!. Took it in today and after 1 hour of checking was told that tandem fuel pump was leaking and needed replacing. No spares available in UK so must wait about 1 week for spare to be sent from Germany.
Any others experienced this with the new Passat. Could this be related to the earlier recall of TDI based VW's due to ill fitting bolts on the fuel pump housing???

In an answer no but
"If only everything was as reliable as a Volkswagon"
Dealer obviously didn't sell it with a full tank.

Opted for a cherised number transfer rather than full tank of diesel during negitiations. Maybe should have gone for the full tank then the fuel leak might have been spotted before I took delivery.
Spoke to the service manager today - he claims that the problem is not related to the faulty bolt issue that prompted the earlier recall. The fuel pump itself appears to be the problem. Still waiting to hear date for new pump to be shipped from Germany. Maybe should suggest they cannibalise one of their stock cars???

Trust they've given you a "Lupo" as a coutesy car ? in thanks for being so forgiving.

Wondered what on earth a tandem fuel pump was, so I found an explanation of a fault, by chance. www.theaa.com/allaboutcars/recalls/recalls.jsp?mod...2
"Recalled vehicles will have the pump checked for being of a certain manufacture. If found to be within the affected range, the pump housing cover bolts will be replaced."
Note the bolts only need replacing. but sounds awfully like yours, Arlowood! Maybe the manager has a faulty memory?

Yes guys - thanks for the links. Had already found the recall notice on the AA website. Service manager seemed adamant that the problem with my car was different. He said it was the fuel pump itself that was faulty and leaking - not associated with the housing bolts. Don't know if this was just him trying to suggest that mine was a "Special" problem not encountered before. By the way they have organised me a hire car under the warranty scheme - a Passat 1.9TDI estate.
News today that the replacement pump is expected on 12th October and will take 2 hours to fit. I will await developments but am not holding my breath.
