Car Value 2.0i GLS Vauxhall Cavalier - Star
Now then - I decided and hope to complete on my new motor shortly.

In the meantime I need to sell my trusty old steed who has looked after me well. Regularly serviced, MoT due next February (which is when it would normally have its service too), CD player, Alloys, 76,000 on the clock (true), good tyres including spare, generally problem free and good looking for the year 1994(M). What price should I expect to realise for my 2.0i GLS Vauxhall Cavalier? I will wash and polish it and hoover and clean too if you wish :-).

Come on you chaps - give a girl a helping hand. I don't want to give my car away and would really appreciate your help here.

£1,000?

Did you look in online Autotrader to get an idea? My guess is that it would be overpriced at £450, but I know nuffin. Edited (cos I can) - maybe that's a bit low...)

At the end of the day, it's only worth what someone will pay for it, as they always say. So choosing your advertising medium is important too.
Car Value - Star
I don't know anything about advertising a vehicle like this. In this area lots of vehicles go around the town with A4 ads stuck on the side windows of the vehicle - I don't know if this is actually effective. Please tell me. Sorry if I seem impatient but you all know so much and I am willing to learn.
Car Value - smokie
"A4 ads stuck on the side windows of the vehicle" - might work - costs nothing - worth doing.

This any use to you?

So you?re a girl? Hmmmm...

Anyway, there?s a chap in another thread who paid £160 for a ?94 Primera (high miles but good nick) so I?m going in under Smokie at £400.
Car Value - Star
Autotrader gives very depressing reading. Even though my car is fully serviced, etc, it seems at this age it holds little sway. It looks like going in at about £550 and bartering a bit.
OK, so stickers on windows is good, how about local papers?

Big Bad Dave - yeah - female of the species anyway but girlhood a long way behind me now.
Car Value - Adam {P}
I'd stick it on Autotrader, put some posters in the windows and drive around as usual.

There's always eBay but that's if you can be bothered signing up (if you aren't already).

If the car's in cracking nick then it give the potential buyer very little to work with in terms of knocking the price down.

Good luck,

Put 12 months MoT on it. Ad it for £750.00. They still have (a deserved) following.

They still have (a deserved) following.

Indeed. A friend's daily driver is a 1984 (B plate) Vauxhall Cavalier 1600. Surprisingly tidy and by all accounts reliable it is, too.

His other car is a rather nice Stag still with original engine installed instead of some Buick V8 interloper. For the mileage he does, cam chains are not an issue but originality is.
Car Value - Dude - {P}
Star is your car an 8 valve or 16 valve engine as you did`nt say.???

If the bodywork is original and with full service history, 75k miles is not great mileage for one of these motors and would make a reliable purchase at £500.

I had a 2 litre SRi Cavalier and it was the most reliable vehicle I have ever owned, it never let me down and I regularly got 38 mpg.

Star, what are you buying? Like "Dude" I have had a lot of experience of Cavaliers and if I were you I'd be strongly tempted to hold on to it.

Well- no laughing now - a Skoda estate.

I happen to know a sterling chap who drives a Skoda Estate and I'll not hear anything bad said about him/them.

If I had a 94 Cavalier 2.0 with nothing major wrong with it, I'd keep it and spend the money on something else.

I suspect it is because the Cavalier is not an Estate.

That said Star, I am joining the ranks and saying "Don't Do it!". Plus you could be saving all that grief about how to pay for the new car;)

Price - Probably £500 to £750 with 12 months MOT
Car Value - Hugo {P}
If you do decide to sell, stick it in the classifieds section on this site.

If the Skoda's old and past it then fair enough but you have no idea if it's a brand new Octavia or Fabia. Maybe even a vRS!

Would you still have the Cav?

I'd keep it until something expensive went wrong. Likely to be a very long time in my experience.

Mmmmm - I think some of you are romantics.

I need reliability, comfort, space for a wheelchair (not mine!), and am planning for the next 10 years - after which time I will probably buy a Micra as a geriatric pram because I bet they will still be making them.

There is no way I am wandering around with a load of cash. My vendor would prefer Bankers Draft and suggested I post it to him the day before I pick up the car. If he wasn't such a decent bloke I would have died laughing.

Star, your Cav sounds like a damn good genuine car that has been looked after and will give someone a few years of reliablw service. However, its 11 or so years old and in the market place you are unlikely to get much for it. It's one of those cars that's 'worth more as a car' than the cash you can get for it - if you know what I mean.

IMHO I think you could ask £750 and be prepared to negotiate. Presentation could make all the difference so yes do polish and hoover it out.

Good luck!
Car Value 2.0i GLS Vauxhall Cavalier - Sprice
Revered by reps in its day, Cavs are a sound car capable of big mileages without much problem. I had a 1990 SRi which was incredibly economical (over 40mpg easily)but also fast!

I had the saloon as thought they looked better, but the 5 door hatchbacks (yours??) are easier to sell on, more numerous, and in greater demand.

You should get £500 for yours all day long, advertise at £600, prepare to come down.

I'm the bloke that got the 200k 94 Primera 1.6L for 160 quid off ebay.

Cars which are 10 years old are priced more on overall condition than mileage. It's worth more to you than to the used car market. When it comes to the older cars, it's the Japanese models like Carinas, Accords, and Primeras that are sought after. Take a look at London minicabs, you won't find many Cavaliers/Vectras/Mondeos/Lagunas being used.

Maybe a Cavalier enthusiast would pay top money for your car, but with newer designs like Vectra/Mondeo going for silly money these days, I reckon your car is worth no more than 250 quid right now, maybe 350 if you put a year's MOT on it.

Star -

Like others I would hang on to a reliable car like this if I could. I like Cavaliers and have had a couple as company cars in my time.

If you are selling however I would not bother with any form of advertising where you have to shell out serious cash.

I would go the route of a for sale notice in the window of the car and then put it on a card in a few local newsagents windows for a couple of weeks .

I'd put it in at £750 and be prepared to come down a bit.

Its got to be worth that to someone who is looking for a cheap and well looked after motor.

Have a folder ready with as much of the service and repair paperwork as you can to show any potential purchaser .

Good Luck

If you are determined to sell it despite the advice above then the A4 ad in the car window is a good way to go but don't put your own phone number in . Put in the number of the man in your life - father, partner, son whatever. Unfortunately there are some low lifes around who will take advantage of a female driving round with her phone number on the window beside her. It is a sad world but that is the way it is.

The other thing you should do is to put an ad in the local free advert newspaper - Loot or what ever it is in your area.

Make sure the car looks really smart - wash, polish, vacuum. First impressions count. Clean oil and fresh coolant are good also.

>>> If you are determined to sell it despite the advice above then the A4 ad in the car window is a good way to go<<<

And as you will know if you have read this forum over the past few months, if you get calls from people wanting money to put the car "on a database" who claim to have "buyers waiting", run a mile!
Car Value 2.0i GLS Vauxhall Cavalier - barchettaman
Star, keep it for another year if you can, then you can scrap it knowing that you have made up the 500 quid you would have made on it by missing out on the depreciation you would have incurred on the new car over that time period.
Cracking cars though, as you seem to have got a good one, and as it is trouble free, there is definitely a case to be made for keeping it until a really nasty problem renders it beyond economic repair. Good luck whatever you do.
Car Value 2.0i GLS Vauxhall Cavalier - Hugo {P}
To be fair to Star, the car is going no matter what.

Most of us have suggested around the £500 to £750 mark, assuming its presentable.

Nutty Nissan suggested a lot less than that. Whilst I would agree that mileage makes less difference at this age, 79k as opposed to 200k would still command a significant price difference, as opposed to say 50k and 70k.

A good point by someone, an ad in the car with your phone number may not be the best idea. Use your partner's etc for security.

Furthermore, at this money you will attract any number of people from a very wide cross section of society, you should consider having a friend with you (preferably male) when you host viewings and test drives. Sorry if this sounds chauvenistic but I do think you need to think of your safety.

As I said before, please feel free to post a classified ad on this site (use the drop down menu that currently says "Discussion") and type away.

Good luck with the sale and with your new car - and thanks for giving us a great thread to discuss.

Have you thought of eBay?

Typically items will bid up to their value on there - so let the buyer decide how much it's worth. There's always the risk you won't get as much as you want for it, but then sometimes bidders get carried away and you make more than you expected.

It may sound strange to Star, but if the car was offered in PX for new car,its possible a larger discount may have been offered "to not PX"some garages do not like the hasle of selling on/Auctioning, unless this has already been negotiated in which case.It isnt going to matter what it sells for,but unless its actually wanted by someone may be hard to sell. But as suggested E.bay is a good place to try

::Casts my vote for e bay::

Both times I've used e bay to sell a car I've not been dissapointed. Both buyers liked what they saw in the metal and didn't hesitate to hand over the cash.

If you go this route be honest about the car and give a good middle of the road description. Best you get £50 less than you could have done that have the buyer walking away because the seller had oversold it.

Trade in? I suspect from your other thread that the new purchase is a private one?
Car Value 2.0i GLS Vauxhall Cavalier - blue_haddock
Yep Ebay gets my vote too - If a very tatty Metro with hardly any MOT can go for the best part of £400 i'd say your Cav should go for a fair bit more.

>>> If you are determined to sell it despite the advice above then the A4 ad in the car window is a good way to go<<<

Tempting to say 'why advertise an A4 in the window of a Cavalier?'....

Seriously, the only thing I know about economics is that the 'right price' for any item is what some poor sap is prepared to pay for it. So if you give it a really good valet inside and out and advertise it as low-mileage, GLS-spec with extras, much-loved and very clean, you might get someone who loves Cavaliers and is prepared to pay over the odds for a good one - a retired chap, say, buying a car to last him for the rest of his life.

You could even try £900 - you might just get a bite - then be prepared to climb down gradually.
