I'm loosing coolant from the rear of the engine (1994 2 litre 8 valve petrol), towards the timing end. I fear the leak may be from the core plugs (although I have not completly eliminated a problem with the oil-encrusted cooling pipes). Is it practical to replace core plugs without removing the engine from the car? Access seems very limited, especially towards the right rear because the sub-frame and driveshaft bearing carrier (etc) are in the way. I'm finding it difficult to see the source of the leak, let alone imagine how to fix it!
I'm hoping there are "Back Roomers" who have solved similar problems and are willing to offer advice.
Thanks, in anticipation.

I'm loosing coolant from the rear of the engine (1994 2 litre 8 valve) - I previously thought a core plug was leaking but now it appears to be comming from the plasic piece which connects the bottom hose and heater hose to the rear of the block. Are these prone to fracture and how difficult are these to replace (access is not particularly easy)?
Any comments would be appreciated

Sorry I dont know the 405,but would suspect a plastic joint as they are in several cars problematic.Ie they do split, not only cooling systems but power steering reservoir joints as well as others.once they split replacement is only course of action

I've only just seen this post, but if I had seen it originally, I would have pointed to the plastic housing immediately. They are well known to leak, and replacements are not expensive. Fitting them is an absolute mare though! The only real way is to remove the O/S drive shaft to get enough room - and even then you will be faced with a load of PSA 'one way' jubilee clips you have to chiesel off. Expect 3-4 hours labour at a garage to fit this £10 part....
