Wheels come and wheels go... The race is on since forever and the industry is pushing hard, trying to convince everyone that the new model is way better than its predecessor. But is it always a rule of a thumb ?
Let?s take a Merc E-class W124, as an example. Nice car... then in ?96 came the W210 (the rusty one, though only at the beginning, BUT still rusty). And the current one, well... Figure it out for yourself...
Another one: Citroen Xanta, probably the most reliable Citroen ever and certainly more reliable than the C5.
Perhaps the only exception would be the Alfa Romeo as it gets better and better...

And much better looking than the C5 - I think my wife's Xantia HDi Exclusive is a "looker" (And she's not bad either!!)
Same with recent BMs - nothing like as good looking as older models - though I expect they will grow on me.
Golfs?
Focii?

Early 90's Cavalier and first (to UK) Vectra. In HJ's words, a whole step backwards from the Cavalier.

Rover 200 & 400's. The 1989 version were smart cars for the time that people wanted to but. The mid 90's replacements were overpriced and too small.

And the ugly as sin Scorpio. OK the previous Granada wasn't much of a looker, but what were they thinking?

I had a '93 Cavalier, a '96 and '98 Vectras as company cars, the Cavalier was solid and reliable, the '96 Vectra troublesome though felt much more modern, the '98 Vectra was pretty well sorted and handled better too.

Lovely Peugeot 205 followed by the desperately disappointing 206.

Though there was a gap of, what, 7 years between them.

The excellent MR2 Mk II followed by the roadster Mk III.
For looks, there is the Focus/Focus2 ........

The excellent Mk1 escort, followed by the boxy Mk2 then the desparately disappointing mk3 onwards.

I don't think that improved design comes as a natural progression. It depends to a great extent on the calibre of the employees at the time ~ and that can go down as well as up.

I would agree with everything apart from Phil's BM suggestion (sorry Phil - I love 'em) and BB's Golf suggestion. We had a mark 2 when F reg was new which would make me.....5? ish - I still remember it to this day. Fantastic car.

Oh yeah - and the er...."all new 2005 Focus" with all old 1990 styling.

The superb Sierra followed by the mundane Mondeo with its rusting coolant pipe, awkward cambelt,oh,and power going to the front wheels.

The Ford Fiesta Mk IV may have been a better car than the Mk III, but I preferred the Mark III (& bought a run-out one at the beginning of 1997!) simply because the interior of the MK III felt much more airy and spacious than the Mark IV - and also had lots of flat surfaces that you could put things on.
