Astra (F type) clutch - normd
I've just purchased an old K plate Astra for my son to learn to drive in. If I put the handbrake on and let the clutch up the car willstall so the clutch appears to be ok BUT I noticed that if on a rise (on ramp to motorway) and I floor the throttle the revs rise sharply before the speed increases. The clutch action is heavy and feelingless. Does anyone know how easy/difficult a clutch change on these is (I've done it on mk2 Escorts and mk 3 Cortinas before - yes I am that old) Could it be something as simple as the clutch cable? is that a simple job to replace? Any help most welcome.

I would change the clutch cable first as it's a doddle to change, and if stiff could be stopping the clutch releaseing properly, causeing the problems. Disconnect from the gearbox engine end first, then stick your head up under the dash to release the other end. Fitting is the reversal of dismantling as they say. Using the threaded adjuster at the gearbox end of the cable, adjust the cable until the clutch pedal is level or slightly highre than the brake pedal.

Clutch is also easy to change. 50 minute job including a t-break. Dont need to split the engine/gearbox to do it. Just remove an ispection panel and it comes out through the hole--once you've undone a couple of other things. All explained clearly in a Haynes manual.

Thanks Caveman, I'll have a go at replacing the cable at the weekend.
