hi i have a 04 plate diesel zafira 20 ltr dti its in the main dealers today, i have been informed that it has got water in the fuel system and could need a new fuel pump and injectiors and a fuel filter, at my expence as they say its not a warrienty repair, has anyone had the same problems with a diesel please help many thanks trev

Heard of repairs on that scale with common rail diesels after fuel contaminated with petrol, dont know about water. Filter should remove trace quantities from condensation etc. Assuming there are no try on issues with the garage you need to find out how the water got in.
If you've uplifted a water/diesel mix from a filling station then I'd agree it's not a warranty issue. Where do you buy fuel, anything in local press etc about other customers who've bought contaminated stuff?
On the other hand if rainwater were to leak into the tank or coolant found its way in via a fuel heater then it would be for the dealer to sort out under the warranty.

WHy did it go into the main dealer Trevs. What problems were you having previously. And how did they come to this conclusion?.

the probs i have been getting are engine management light been coming on since 4 months ago, only first thing in the morning for a few mins, the dealer service the car at 12000 miles and was told about the light coming on they said cant find no faught codes in the computer, the car was running fine in till 2 weeks ago then started running rough fuel was last put in the car 4 weeks ago and has been running ok for 2 weeks, then started running rough and misfireing, if it had water from the garage after filling up i would of thought it would of started playing up after filling up the car, many thanks for you kind advice trev

trevs, I'm not a mechanic but have a Vectra with the same engine as yours.
Had a similar experience regarding the engine management light and losing power. Its a long story which I wont repeat but the main dealer had it for a week during which they diagnosed the turbo had gone. Replaced it and then refitted my own as it hadnt cured the problem. Eventually they had to take it to another main dealer as they just couldnt find what was wrong. They found the CAT was partially blocked. Replaced and the engine was brilliant again.
Helicoptor had a similar problem and again it turned out to be the same as mine. Have a search for contributions from him..
Not saying yours is the same of course but after my experience of main dealers I would take what they say with a pinch of salt.
Might be worth asking them to try running the engine with the CAT disconnected.

Quite a lot of these cases of contaminated fuel wrecking HP Diesel systems. The problem doesn't always show up immediately either. This is the main reason I wouldn't advise anyone to buy a modern HP Diesel - pick up a bad fill of fuel and you can be hit with a bill of £2k+ and no means of knowing which fill did the damage. Then there's the prospect of the wife/child etc putting some petrol in by accident...
|
Pardon my ignorance, but what is an HP diesel?
|
High Pressure - i.e. the new 'common rail' type that run at very high pressures. The tolerances in the pumps etc are quite amazing - basically its aerospace-standard engineering. If lubrication is degraded (by contaminated fuel) then things start to unravel pretty quickly and the whole fuel system falls down. Its all expensive stuff too..
The great advantage (IMHO) of the Diesel engine was its simplicity, robustness and freedom from electronics. The move to HP systems has knocked that on the head. I'm sure many buyers don't realise just how sophisticated modern Diesels are..

many thanks for you kind advise everyone, i think i will stick with my old 17 td cavalier its done 187000 miles and is much more relible then my zafira, and allways starts and runs lovly
many thanks again trevs

But surely the 2.0Dti is old style technology, and not one of the common rail variants, thought these engines were bullet proof if looked after.
|
If its the same 2.0 Dti as in my 1998 Vectra it is not common rail (thankfully) . This engine came out in 1997 and replaced the Isuzu 1.7 engine which were in the first Vectras.
|
Well, I could be wrong - I assumed that a 2004 would have a common rail unit. If it is the old engine dating back to '97 then its not CR - its the one that uses a lot of oil ;-). These are pretty reliable and should be able to tolerate a small amount of water contamination.
|
Strange, i recently bought an 03 Vectra 2.0Dti knowing that they had an oil burning issue, but i've done 10,000 miles in mine and it hasn't used a drop of oil (how pleased am i )I think they may have overcome the problem a couple of years ago.
|
just came back from the car dealers, its going to be £358.00 to clean the fuel system, and then they said if the car runs ok, if not then new injectors and pump, a man asked me when i was there do petrol zafiras burn oil his burns an engine full of oil to do 2000 miles, he was told as the cars 9 months old and done 8000 miles they do that intill the engine beds in, lol
|
I would first ask to see an analysis of the diesel ,I doubt whether it would need new injectors or pump more likely problem are valves and head and £350 to clean the system is bullexcrement. It seems an easy way not do warranty work.As far as burning oil anything that genuinely used that much is Knackered
