You know, what we used to call a log book. My Fiat Panda 4x4 is registered as a 156 cc Ford Escort Ghia TD. There are numerous other mistakes relating to engine no. etc. Have others had this happen and if so is it DVLA or the dealer who has made the mistake?

Have you a privete plate on it?

Sorry, "private".

Yes, I have a private plate. Also the police stopped me yesterday because the car did not match the DVLA database.

The plate was probably once on an Escort and a DVLA clerk has not amended the records properly. A call to the DVLA required, what did the police say?

The registration certificate on one of my bikes shows it as having 2 previous keepers. I know it has had 3 or 4, but as the first log book was lost, (I have the second,) I cannot prove it.
They do admit that 10 years of ownership is missing, but tell me they do not make mistakes like that & that there must be a reason for the omission !!!, but will not tell me that reason.
So I would guess you have been either been sold a Ford & are totally deluded about the fact it's a Fiat, or DVLA have registered it as a Ford for very good reason, as they do not make mistakes.

Apparently, according to www.abd.org.uk/pr/450.htm (this ABD press release)

about one third (!) of all of the DVLA's vehicle data is incorrect...

On similar lines... I live at an address along the lines of:

XX Brilliant Street House
Brilliant Street
London
WX ABB

There is also an addess on the same street:

XX Brilliant Street
London
WX CDD

I have recently noticed that my car is registered on the V5 to:

XX Brilliant Street
London
WX ABB

...on other words, the address of the other house, but with my post code. V5 was delivered to me with no redirection or anything so it didn't occur to me that the address was wrong. But it is.

Obviously the first step is to register a change of address to correct their mistake. But to what extent am I breaking the law here? What would be the fallout if I was to be issued an NIP that didn't get to me due to the DVLA's mistake?

In my last job I analysed DVLA data for vehicle population stats. I can confirm the data was full of mistakes.
