Very proud of my fab Volvo S60 D5.
Upset that today I find out that there is now a new D5 engine with 185 bhp (mine 163bhp) and 400nm Torque (mine 340nm) 0-62mph at 8.5 secs (mine 9.2 or 9.5 depending on which Volvo brochure you read) and a 6 speed gearbox (mine has 5 but could do with a higher gear).
I see they have now also launched a 126hp version as well as keeping the 163hp version I have, and the new 185hp one.
The two lower powered versions look like they will be badged 2.4D and the most powerful as a D5.
I had heard rumours on Volvo discussion groups about the higher powered engine being introduced next year but was suprised it is available now, 2 months after I get my new car.
How is a buyer supposed to know of forthcoming updates to enable them to make an informed decision about what to buy and when? I was pretty well clued up, did lots of reasearch and went onto various owners clubs on the web so thought I was well prepared. The car was only facelifted last August so I thought I was getting the most up to date version.
Still, I can't complain tooooo much as the car is superb and the engine is a corker, it would just have been nice to have the even faster one. Mind you, mine is deceptively quick and already all too license threatening!

Hello SFP, It does not seem to long ago that you were posting about choosing an S60, I am sure that the 185 bhp version was common knowledge at the time, did you ask your dealer before ordering the 163?
Regards.

Getting a 22% discount (see your other post) may have been a clue that the decks were being cleared.

If you bought a new car and didn't do your homework, well whose fault is that?
Why should a dealer tell you a new engine is on the way? Their job is to shift metal.
If anyone buys a new car there's always a facelift/new spec/engine/update/etc round the corner.
Moral? Always do some research beforehand.

Go on, kick him some more ;-)

Well, if you'd asked if any model spec changes were afoot, I could have told you...! Perfectly true!
To be fair though... I didn't do this when I ordered my V70 2.4T SE in December 2002 for March 2003 delivery, and promptly found out that the 2.4T engine was being replaced with the 2.5T around the same time! Oh well!
Thankfully, I was delighted with the car anyway (the first "perfect" car I have ever owned, with no faults on delivery) and the way it performed, and am even more so as a result of the BSR 252bhp/410NM software upgrade. It has now gone from serenely fast to absurdly so.
If you're interested, a number of software providers will get your D5 up to the same sort of mark as a new D5, albeit without the six speed 'box of course. Best reputation for the D5 motor is proabably RICA, this upgrade providing 198bhp and 410NM for the sum of EUR775. Read more at www.rica.nl/index.php?phmu=21&pctt=14

Thanks SjB. As the car is I am happy with the performance and would not want to cause insurance / warranty hassle with an upgrade (maybe in 3 years when the warranty runs out?)
As for the other comment from Colin, fair point! Should have given me a clue perhaps?
As for Imagos stating I ought to have done some research, I thought that I had put in my original post that I had? Research, Volvo owners club discussion groups, etc.
Ho Hum.
Still, I shouldn't complain too much. I am lucky to have the car I have. I have seen people buying cars for full list just before that car has been completely face lifted / replaced. At least my one is still current.
To be fair to the dealer though, I do not think I would have got the same deal on the new engine if I had waited 'til now. As Colin pointed out, this is why I got the discount obviously.

Could have been worse. You could have bought a Rover 8 weeks ago, for example - then an engine upgrade would have been the least of your worries...
Seriously though, both yours and the new version sound like cracking motors that anyone would be proud to own.

yes correct.. should have read properly
apologies.

No probs Imagos.
I am not complaining really as I am very happy with what I have.
I suppose I am thinking of other people that are maybe not clued up to do research.
Is there an easy way for other people to see if a car is about to be replaced apart from the obvious What Car? type magazines and possibly owners clubs?
In retrospect I am not saying 'woe is me!' but I am thinking of the bigger picture.
Thinking about it, the answer is obvious. Post a message on here and ask if anyone in the trade knows of an impending change.
Why didn't I think of that?!
Off to pour a glass of red wine and hope it might kick-start the old brain waves! Cheers!

SlightlyFatRep --I salute you.
After some pretty harsh replies (unnecessary in my view) you responded like a Gentleman and remained courteous.
I'd have come straight out of the undergrowth looking to gore someone.
Time for a little think on your example.

Time to file down those tusks Tony!
Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.....etc, etc.
Anyway, they might be bigger than me! :0)

Don't rely too much, for research, on these car mags; "Every new car on sale in UK listed and rated" etc. I have been driving a very common car for over a year, which still doesn't feature in many of these - a 1580cc/110bhp Peugeot 307. Most magazines only list to 2 litre variant and ignore the 1600cc one. I e mailed one of the mags and they replied saying that mine must have been a limited run variant now out of production, which it isn't!

Very true Armitage.
The S60 info in that prestigious magazine (ahem!) still has a pre-face lift S60 picture and completely inaccurate spec list for it. As for the new 3 series the picture and new spec was in there before the cars hit the dealerships.
