Audi A6 belt change - MarkyBl
Can anyone help in giving me the procedure for changing the 3 drive belts (air con, alternator and water pump) on a 1.8T engine for a 99 saloon. There does not appear to be enough room to access the belts.
thanks

There isn't ! Or at least not if by water pump you mean the timing belt.

The front end of the car comes off instead. Bumper/headlights/ etc

thats why its such an expensive job (6 hours labour I think)

Hi MarkyBl,

Does the lock carrier slide forward like on a A4?

El Dingo.

On the 1.8T the waterpump is driven by a separate belt so the Op does not mean the timing belt.
On the A4 there is enough space to change those belts.
Reach the Ac and WPump belts from below and the serpentine jobby from above.
Release the serpentine belt tension with a large spanner on the cast-on lug on the tensioner then pin it in place from behind its mounting with a nail or allen key. The AC belt must come off first.
This link shows a timing belt replacemnt on a Passat 1.8T which is not disimilar.

Do you mean on the A6 there's enough room to change those belts? ;-)

Thanks Alec. All 3 belts can be changed in situ then as the top serpentine belt looks as though there is not enough access room from the top?

thanks

Well, I have done it on a A4 and two passats which are in essence the same as an A6. There is a bit more room on a passat than the A4 and your A6 is about the size of a passat.
The aircon belt has to come off first and you must do that from underneath for access to its own tensioner which is static.
If you peg the ribbed belt (serpentine) tentioner with a nail or allen key you will find that there is just enough space.
FWIW I have changed the belts in the past but in hindsight they seem to go on for ever so if they are not damaged\fraying or cracked then I would not bother.
