Has Volkswagen's cambelt change interval changed?

My local dealer claimed the policy was changed a few weeks ago to 100,000 miles without a time limit. The vw website is vague suggesting 4-5 years but check model yet there is no way on the website to do this. I have a California Ocean and a Golf 1.6 Diesel SE. What is the truth now?

We have heard reports from other Volkswagen owners that the manufacturer has extended this service interval, and it is not uncommon for this to happen, but for components that have a service life such as the cambelt, even if it fails within the recommended interval and you have maintained its service record there is no guarantee that the manufacturer will pay for all the repairs should it fail. If you are unsure you can check with another Volkswagen dealer or Volkswagen UK.

Although it is a significant expense, we would give consideration to having the timing belt replaced ahead of the recommended interval if you plan to own your vehicles longer term.
