Which is the best radio station for traffic reports?

Next Saturday, I shall be going oop North to Yorkshire (Yes, yes, I know, I shall be very careful) Which radio stations would BRers recommend to a simple Southerner to keep me out of traffic jams and other troubles?

To start the ball rolling, in the London area, I suggest 1152 am, - which I think, is or was, LBC (London Broadcasting Company) which has traffic reports every 10 minutes. 97.3 FM has the same reports every 30 minutes - the rest of the station's output is pretty dire.

If you have FM then the best would be Radio 2 .The only AM station with national coverage would be Talksport on 1063 and 1089 .
But if you have a radio with RDS/TA/TP just put the Traffic Announcement service on and you will get updates from pretty well every BBC station enroute at least twice an hour

The trouble with Radio 2 and its like, is that you have to listen to reports from the Isle of Skye, Port Mullion and everywhere else. I am quite prepared to retune as I go North (or South, on the way home)

The TP service is just too difficult for me to manage!

Not found a reliable one yet. For shortish journeys (1 hour or so) find AA on line very good.

Generally find BBC radio reporting jams that have cleared- although did once find myself sat in a jam that BBC said had cleared and traffic was flowing freely.

If you want local traffic reports on a long journey you HAVE to get to grips with TP on RDS.

Can get to grips with it but can't do with constant break in to alert me to trouble in Oxfordshire or Cambrigeshire when I'm travelling from Northampton to London!

Radio 5 live (693/909 AM) does fine for me. Both frequencies are on presets and just need to toggle between them moving from one transmitter area to the next.

yes radio 5 is great, if you want the news of the jams in Glasgow.

Better start listening to 5 then...

Radio traffic announcements are only good for telling you about the jam you are already in. Local stations (in North Yorkshire)broadcast RDS information at set times, usually to say there are no significant problems. Why use RDS TP to tell us that? Holdups are rarely described other than at the set times. RDS - a great disappointment.

However, Yorkshire is a big place; give us more information about your route and destination.

I am travelling from Surrey (near J10 M25) to Airton, near Skipton in Yorkshire.M1, M40, A1 etc, it all depends on the traffic reports as to the precise route that I take!

I do find that radio traffic reports can be worthwhile - if you find out the times of transmission in the area and listen in regularly.

I find the problem with Radio 2 and tp, is they give you so much information that is irrelevant, that is why I would prefer to know the local frequency and then I find that the information is for me and is useful.

At least with Radio 2 & TP I get 'local' bulletins as well as the national ones. Driving / crawling past Fleet services in the mornings listening to Wogan I'm frequently interrupted by bulletins for BBC radio Bristol, for example:-/.

I usually find the traffic reports kick in on the radio(TP) when I have already been sitting in the jam for half an hour!!!
