3.2 did Shogun auto box? - gasoil
My 2001 shogun is coming up for its 54,000 service! Dealership wants £560 to service! So I am going to a good independant. My question is the auto fluid is due changed, would it be worth while going to an autobox specialist to get it properly flushed with the correct tool, because i know you cant do a complete change cause half the oil remains in the torque convertor? Also does anyone know who makes this transmision it is the five speed tipronic? suspect asian warner.

Tranmission is a Mitsubishi unit. They have their own fluid (Diamond SPIII) - a slight variant on Dexron III. These transmissions cost mega-money to repair so have a proper full flush through and be sure that the correct fluid is used.

Aprilia I take it from your reply that your know a bit about auto trans. Can you tell me your thoughts on the following, when towing the box will tow in fifth gear but very rarely goes into lock up. Even when driving without caravan it only locks up at 60 mph on light throtle, it will not stay in lock up until car is doing 80 mph but that is only 2400 rpm! So would it be easier on the gearbox and the oil if I let it stay in fourth and the T/C locks up at around 60 mph 2200 rpm? I have up till now left it in drive and let it make its own mind up. Must admit it would pull a house down it goes realy well.

This 'box has adaptive shifting using 'fuzzy logic' control. It is supposed to adapt its behaviour to your driving habits. You can 'reset' it by disconnecting the battery for half-hour. It will then start from scratch and re-learn your habits.

I don't think leaving it in 4th will make any difference to the gearbox, although the oil might run a bit cooler. Best thing you can do if towing is to add an extra cooler.

How often does it change its setting? I have owned it for over a year it must have adapdted to me by now!

Also my last question I hope. If mitsubishi build it, is it any good? seems to work well but is it reliable? what faults do they get etc?

Initial adaption takes place over a couple of hundred miles - the 'box continually adapts though.

They are pretty reliable. The thing that kills them is overheating - heat is the enemy of all auto's. If you are into towing then a cooler is a good idea. Keep the fluid clean with regular changes.
