Failed an MoT on headlights - struggling to find new ones.
My headlamps caused me to fail my MoT.
Parts are no longer available.
To keep an otherwise good car on the road, can I use auxiliary lamps in place of main/dipped beam?
Bit more detail, if you want.
'97 SAAB 9000 saloon - reflectors corroded.
Several options possible:
- re-silvering (high risk of breaking the adjuster in dismantling)
- replacements from a breakers yard (may be worse than originals)
If all this fails, the car is off the road - a shameful waste.
Is it legal/MoT friendly to do the following:
- fit 4 spot lights on the bumper, in front of the headlamps
- align 2 of them as main-beam and 2 as dipped-beam
- wire them in to replace the headlamps
In other words, do the MoT regulations speak of 'original headlamps'?
Or do they just require white main & dipped beams?

No, for the UK anyway you can't do the bodge. You could go to the used parts market or adapt headlight units from something else so they align properly, dip properly and are height-adjustable for load. This must have happened before. (It seems you can buy new. Google came up with some sources. This is one, but not cheap at £350 a side: www.partsforsaabs.com/product_info.php?products_id...3 Keep Googling <SAAB 9000CD headlights> and you may find more.)
