Well the old M40 was a mess tonight. Burnt out car transporter northbound near stokenchurch. It had been a big fire, every car (at least 6) was a smoking shell. Hard to tell what they were but all were estates, and judging by the rear light holes high up the rear pillars they looked like Accord tourers, possibly volvos. Hard to tell when the car is stripped of all mouldings and bumpers.
Huge Q northbound, a large percentage had been there so long people were wandering all over the place, some were even having street parties.

Sure the whole thing wasn't a protest by the Greens?

Its not what you drive, its how you drive it! :-)

Having heard about this earlier in the evening, I clean forgot about it when taking friends collected from Stansted on a guided tour of London by night; We joined the westbound Western Avenue queue at the North Circular tunnel, the time by then being almost 22:00!
Thankfully, TomTom's "Alternative Route / Avoid M40" had us peeled off and heading home another way in no time. :-)

personally i prefer the back roads that run parallel to the M40 around that area all the way from chesham to oxford. Far more fun to drive but i guess knowing the area helps.

Can't think exactly where it is though heading north on the M40 there is a sharp ish left hand bend (used to be entertaining at 90 in my old Cav TD), approx 10 years ago I was travelling up the M40 (I guess in my old Cav TD) and came across a transporter that had deposited it's load of Audis in the field on the inside of the bend, there were at least half a dozen cars on their roofs, seems he had got a snake on going around the bend.

Before it opened there was a TV program where Rowan Atkinson drove a horse and cart round that very bend. Wasn't that bend put in to protect some vitally important species of butterfly?

Unfortunately this one was big enough to mess up the roads in a large area, took me nearly an hour to get from the M4 to Marlow.
|
Took 4 hours to cover the few miles between junction 2 and junction 5 of the M40 that evening. People were doing all sorts of strange things on the motorway - reversing, walking, picnicing, breaking down (yes I saw a broken down Toyota for the first time) and some were playing Judas Priest songs at ear-splittingly loud levels.

So why didn't people turn off a J3 or J4?

Gridlock on all slip roads.
