I am about to order a new Transit Chassis Cab LWB with twin rear wheels to be made into a motorhome. There are 2 choices of rear axle ratio:- 3.77 and 4.27, each giving a different GTM. I have been told that one ratio would be better for towing and the other better for motorway travel. Can anyone advise me as to which ratio would be better for a motorhome and why? I am not planning on doing any towing. Thank you for any help you can give.

Lower ratio 4.27 will give good acceleration, higher revs at cruise speed & proportionally greater fuel consumption.
Higher ratio 3.77 will give poorer acceleration, lower cruise RPM & better economy.
Assuming its for long distance cruising and you don't live in a very hilly region I'd go for the 3.77.
Probably worth asking around the Camper web sites.
