Hi Guys
I have a Astra 1.4i Automatic 1994 L reg which is seems to be drinking water. When I got the car about three weeks ago I noticed a small leak from the top raditor hose which I sorted out with a new clip. I have looked at every hose and have not found any trace of water or water marks.
The problem is I am sure the hoses are not leaking I have no water puddles under the car or around the engine/bay but yet for no reason I will find the water filler tank empty of water after a few days.
The engine runs well and has a slight misfire at idle. I can not trace the misfire as it is not a symmetrical misfire it seems ramdom and I am under the impression that it is coming from the timing side?
any ideas
Thanks
Mike

It *could* be that the head gasket has gone and the coolant is escaping out through the exhaust system. Any decent garage should be able to test for hydrocarbons (HC) in the coolant using a gas analyser to see if exhaust gasses are present.
It *could* also explain the misfire.

" It *could* also explain the misfire."
Just what I was thinking. After checking for the usual oily brown mayonnaise on the inside of the oil filler cap or even on the dipstick, it might be worth taking out each spark plug in turn as water leaking into a cylinder bore will tend to "steam clean" the plug tip in the offending bore so that plug will be noticeably cleaner than the others.

Hi
I found no yellow mayo in the oil filler cap or dip stick and I have found a small leak in the hose that runs round the back of the engine under the injection inlet manifold it seems to be leaking from there every now and then and it only seems to be driping very very slowly.
The spark plugs are all the same colour brown but I not sure why it has this misfire at idle.
