Hi
I'm going to be doing an oil change on a mates car on Monday. Now without actually taking the oil plug off first, does anyone know the size of the nylon washer?
I'd normally go to my Ford dealer for filter and washer, but I've already got a filter so it's not worth a seperate trip. When I asked in Halfords last time they said I needed to know the size of the washer because their computer apparantly couldn't tell me.
Thanks in advance.

Mike,
Had this problem with my VW, the only people who do appear to know the correct size are the main dealers ,otherwise it was up to me and I got very good a selecting from a box of assorted washers. I did find that my local car parts shop(s) stocked sump plugs with a washer in a plastic pack, with the make and model listed on the tag. This may help you to fix the right size, without buying the pack. Ford models were very well represented. Hope this is of some help.

Thanks TrevL.
I noticed the packs in Halfords so will try as you suggest and take the pack to the desk and find one that matches. It's a real pain as I'll be doing the work on Monday when the dealership parts dept. is likely to be closed anyhow. I could probably find an old one to match at the bottom of my oil pan though it will probably be squashed!

Remove the washer from an old sparking plug. Seems to work.

Unfortunately I don't own any old sparking plugs, but thanks anyway!
Solution was the Halfords pack in the end: so frustrating when the dealer sells washers at <20p and these packs cost £1.99!
Still, at least it was sunny, on Tuesday it rained all day. The funniest thing about it all was the Haynes manual, which told my friend to
- put the car in first gear (when the front wheels would be off the ground!).
- remove the offside front road wheel (eh?).
- take out the dipstick (so it sits around getting dusty I suppose?).
If anyone could enlighten me on those 3 points then I'd be most intrigued!

To get easier access to the oil filter?

Well that's what it says DD but to be honest it wasn't impeding access, besides which the oil filter points away from the roadwheel. Once you got under there the normal way (from the front!) the only things in the way were the driveshaft and the exhaust, and Haynes didn't tell him to remove them!
Also, I've just thought - I always presumed the "stick it in gear" thing was for when holding the car on ramps, i.e. all four wheels would be on the ground. But how can you do this with one removed? They've got me!
