Hello again,
Its question about above car.I read that your supposed to use 97-99 ron fuel in it or problems arise around 60,000-70,000,and know that previous owner just used 95 ron.I will use the higher one if thats what its supposed to be and would like your comments on it as got no replies back from post i put on site. Also i checked out castrol chart and they say gtx modern 10-40 is oil to use and wondered if i could use Magnatec as thats what i used in my Volvo.Any replies would be most gratefull,Thanks.

The Mitsubihi GDI engine concept requires high octane fuel use, so it would be wise to stick to the recommended fuel, premium unleaded.

Heres what HJ put in the Charisma's CBCB entry:
'GDI system of 1.8s prone to failure at around 60,000 miles due to carbon build up if cars are run on 95Ron petrol rather than the 97 - 99 Ron Super the engine is designed for'.

Thanks Sprice for the info,

Hello,
Just a word of warning. I bought a GDI beginning of Feb this year. Started using Ultimate petrol & put an additive in the tank, after 2 weeks it started running terrible, tickover very erratic, constantly cutting out on tickover , revs surging when driving, pretty hairy at times. Took it to the local Mitsubishi dealer, who pronounced that the better grade of fuel combined with the additive I had been using had started to dislodge the thick black gunge inside the throttle body housing, the gunge (carbon) had unfortunately worn the valve inside the housing, cost for a new housing approx £800. The selling garage (not the dealer) agreed to replace the offending housing with a pattern part ( £425 ) not a genuine one. This part was fitted by the dealer and was absolutely useless and had to be taken off again. By this time we'd had enough of the car so we traded it in for a Seat Ibiza, we informed the Seat Dealer about the problem with the Carisma(true). By the way the GDI had done 64000 miles. Be carefull

Hi Woodlaner,
Thanks for letting me know about that and that is one of things that seems to keep coming up IE that carbon build up.Bit of worry really,Thanks
|
Don't unduly worry though as Mitsubishi know a thing or two about building engines! At the auctions recently a 1.8 GDi had over 150k on the clock, and ran sweetly!
|
You're right of course, I had the one that had been totally neglected. The service manager at the dealers told me they had several customers with high mileage ones that ran fine. It just depends who owned it before, I'll know what to check if I buy another one.
Best of Luck
