My (nearly) new 10 year old Volvo has just sailed through the first MOT I have had done on it. The last time I had to spend more than about £10-£20 to get a car through the test must have been in about 1989!
Am I just lucky? Or just a careful owner?
For example, a friend of mine had to spend over £300 to get her car through it's FIRST MOT ten years ago!
What is the average cost for backroomers?
(Apart from the price of the MOT itself, and obvious parts such as tyres, bulbs, pads etc)

SWMBO's Puntos sailed through it's first MOT yesterday. Nowt required.

I always combine service and MOT where possible.
I used to have my cars serviced by my local 'one man' garage and then he would take to the MOT garage for me and it would cost me buttons. Maximum cost for oil and filter service and MOT usually well under £100.I moved away from the area.
I then bought a Ford from the local main dealer where I live now and they were advertising free MOT's if you had bought the car from them.
I put it in there for a service & MOT at three years old, total cost £700 - Aaaargh!!! but it did include brake pads and two new tyres!
Never went back there though.
Latest MOT £40 for the test + £15 for a wiper blade I could have bought in the local factors for a fiver if I hadn't needed the test done urgently.

Just put my '02 SEAT Ibiza through its first MOT while it was having some warranty work done at the dealer. Other than the £42 (!) MOT test fee, nothing required.
Its emissions reading was 0.48, is that good, bad or indifferent for a diesel ?

No, not that one.

My Omega used to sail through its MOT every year, apart from its first one when they recommended a new set of tyres.
I had it from new and kept it for nine years.

Our 91/H BX has gone for yrs getting thru on zero-£200. This time however quoted £600 (steering rack mostly) plus predictions of other jobs plus oil leak and clutch on last legs. Time for the old girl to go after 12 yrs and 120k miles in our hands.
Looking at Berlingos and Piccassos tomorrow.

IF you are looking at those, BN look at the Kangoo, Partner and Doblo as well. and the new Ford Connect?

Espada III - well if you have a family and need a Lamborghini, what else do you drive?

In the five years I have had my Rover the MOT costs (excluding the test itself) have been
2000 - 0
2001 - 250
2002 - 0
2003 - 76
2004 - 0
Having said that, the old girl is 35 this year (Rover P5 V8!)

Two bikes and a car, only failure was 7 years ago - radiator fan faulty, so couldn't check emissions (they said). I'd never been stuck in traffic up here, sos didn't know. They failed it at the same time for windscreen washer - said it was hitting the wiper blade when parked!. I didn't go there any more.
Had to change disks before tests a couple of times.

Well, having only owned a car for two years, I obviously haven?t had that many failures. But as the car I now own has been in the family about 5 years, I can comment upon its past MOTs.
The first MOT was on the car when bought, so can't comment on that one. But it passed the following 2 without any real trouble. That second one, the car needed a bit of persuading to get through the emissions. It failed the first test by miles, but the car was tested again after being left to warm up a bit more, and passed with flying colours.
The third (under my ownership) was failed due to a hole in the exhaust (which I was aware of) and the emissions again. But somehow, they gave me a ticket, probably because the emissions were not that far out, and the hole in the exhaust made it difficult to test accurately (who knows?). But in hindsight, I?m surprised it passed at all, because it had a failing distributor and perished and cracked breather systems.
The last one, it failed on corroded brake pipes, and a bulb (as always, they always seem to pop just hours before it goes in, cos I make a conscious effort to check before handing the keys over)
All of these have cost next to nothing to repair. None over £100 yet I don't think, but the car is now nearing 12 years old, so what would you expect.

Took an old cavalier for its MOT at a well known franchise, I reckon they could have gone to town on work that needed doing. Luckily my visit coincided with a visit from the DoT inspector, the guy had to justify every check done and my car passed no problem.

In my near 3 year driving career, nothing touch wood, just a wrongly placed green 'P' plate & quick adjustment on the headlight beam!

Its not what you drive, its how you drive it! :-)

1995 BMW 520 went through its MOT without issue and the tester commented that the emmissions were very low for a car of that age and mileage (140,000+).
The morning of the test I had to change a main beam lamp that cost me close to £50 as it was broken by some motorway debris the previous day. That wouldn't be considered an "MOT expense" would it?.

Discovery
Feb 2004 sailed through, no problems
Feb 2005 £500 of welding!
Well I knew it needed some work doing anyway when I bought it and got the cost of that knocked off the price so I'm back to where I started. I bought the K reg TDi at 95k in 2003 for £3k inlcuding £500 knocked off as I knew it needed bodywork.
Garage mechanic says - "you don't want to have this car next year"
The problem is I'm so lazy etc I will still have it next year as I won't have found the time to look for a replacement or sell it, so I guess I'll just have to shop around for quotes :(.
