Here is the problem. New Renault Scenic arrives today, to replace my nearly 10 year old BMW 318. My wife has her own car,and we swap between them. I thought I might hang on to the BMW, for sentimental reasons, and as an emergency spare car, as it is in good order mechanically. To insure it apparantly means going back to 1 year NCB, even though we both have maximum protected NCBs. 3rd party is over £500 per year, the car is worth £1500 at best, and we would only do 3-4k miles a year in it.
Is there a cheap way I can keep it?

Have you tried other insurers? We have had 3 cars insured between two of us and have had full NCB on all three, we even had one on a limited milage and none were classic cars, all just normal run of the mill. We were using that online company with the long nose/trunk. But I am sure others will do, many at a discount as you cant have all 3 on the road at the same time.

Try the AA. I got a quote for a friend last week who was adding a car to the household & so had no 'No Claims' discount for the new car.
The AA gave a quote for Zurich which took into account the existing NCB on her existing car.

Why would you have to go back to a one year NCB if you already have a maximum NCB - is it because it is a completely new policy even though you have insure it in the past?
Have you tried your current insurer as taking out two policies usually means either or both will cost less than usual; or insure it under your name and have your wife listed as a permitted driver?
I only paid £176 for fully comprehensive insurance with DirectLine for my 1999 VW Bora last year (which in turn had been reduced from £193 in 2003), so TPFT at £500+ seems somewhat steep especially with a low annual mileage.

Tesco's Car Insurance is underwritten by UK Insurance Limited, which also does the same for NatWest's various insurance policies and, no doubt, other big names.

Greetings, I have just bought a toy for summer,A Mazda Eunos which is a japanese import (mx5) I tried several and eventually sttled with a company called AON which was £250(ins company Sunn Alliance) against Tesco £450 and direct line £650.as a result I have changed both my other cars from DL saving a total of £600! so they are worth a call!
|
I should have said, my other cars a 2002 BMW 320 and a Renualt Scenic. The price for the Beemer went from £520 to £320, and I do 30,000 miles a year. The Eunos is on restricted mileage of 3000 miles, so it is worth putting a limit on yr Beemer if you not going to do much mileage
|
Were the prices you were given over the internet?
It's worth ringing and talking to a human, to whom you can explain the situation.
I insure my car with privilege, and when SWMBO decided to get a car herself, she would theoretically have had 0 NCD. When she rang and asked about any discounts for a second car in the household, they matched my NCD of 5 years for her!
Also, remember that you can likely get a reduced mileage policy on the car, which should save some money.

If you are limiting your mileage the following co does quotes for 1500 / 3000 / 4500 miles per annum.
They do not protect NCB if <5years. Very pleased with quote for a Yaris. Try it online. You can call them and phone just rings til the UK site answers so no paying phone bills on hold.

Discovered this today trying to get insurance for a new Scooby.
Axa will allow you to use any no claims bonus you have, provided you insure your primary and secondary vehicle with them.
Leon group 6 premium = £580
Scooby Group 19 premium = £863
Other quotes for the scoob were coming in at > £3K!!!
Regards,
Leon

As closure, and for general information, Elephant gave 3 years NCB for the BMW, and almost matched my renewal (best) quote for the Alhambra. It's a shame to leave DL over the NCB issue, as they have been terrific, but that is the market.

Several companies will give second car discounts as long as the group rating is not too high and you can restrict the driving to self or self and spouse. Zurich (broker) will honour the first car bonus and also throw in Green Flag breakdown plus legal expenses cover.
