Hi all
Just been driving down the M57 and my Corsa suddenly cut out.
I managed to get it off the motorway and towed home. I can start it and it will run for about 5-10 seconds and then I hear a click from behind the passenger side dash and immediately the engine management light will come on and it will cut out again. If I try to start it straight away it will not start but if I leave it for say 20-30 seconds it will start again, but again, onlt run for a short space of time.
I have had no previous problems with it at all. It has been regularly serviced and a new exhaust last year.
Thanks in advance for your help

I suspect that if you had the fault codes read you would get a code up for engine RPM signal. This will be spurious as it has detected the engine has stopped. The click from behind the dash may be the main or fuel pump relay unlatching. First stop should still be to get the DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Codes) read as there may be a clue, then check to see what happens when the engine stops, is it no fuel or no spark? Suffice to say that you need some equipment to do this, digital multimeter, oscilloscope etc so trawl your local Yellow Pages for a specialist. Dont go chucking bits at it.
Good luck

Hi Andrew
Sorry for the delay in replying. 11 Month old babies seem to take up all your spare time!
I'm going to spary all the electrical connections under the bonnet with contact cleaner. I suppose it would rule out at least one possibility.
I started it up yesterday morning with no problems at all. I didn't drive it as I was on my way out in our Vectra. It ticked over no problems for a couple of minutes. I want to try and drive it again and see if the fault is heat related.
Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Many thanks

I forgot to mention that I'm taking it to a "friend of a friend" tomorrow who has his own Tune up/Diagnostics business, for the fault codes to be read.
What is a "reasonable" charge to pay for this?
Thanks again

£30 or thereabouts I would imagine.

Hi all!
I thought I'd let you know that the problem has now been resolved!
When they read the fault codes, it turned out to be a sensor problem. I have had both the crankshaft and camshaft sensors replaced.
Just out of curiosity, what should be the average charge I should pay for a non Vauxhall garage to do this work?
Many thanks again

1. That would depend on whereabouts in the country you are situated.
2. Labour rates only, or including parts?

Hi DD
Yep, sorry. I'm in the Merseyside area.
I was looking for a supplied and fit price.
Thanks

Have no idea what Merseyside labour rates would be, but I wouldn't expect to pay an independant garage more than £40 per hour.
I can't find prices for the crankshaft and camshaft sensors for a Corsa either. Guessing the sensors are similar to other Vauxhall engines though, looking on the Autovaux website, a crankshaft sensor and a camshaft sensor are around £35 each. But bear in mind although these *will* be genuine Vauxhall parts, they'll be cheaper than purchasing through a Vauxhall dealer, so the garage that fitted yours more than likely charged you more for these parts than I just quoted.
I wouldn't have thought it would have taken more than an hour to replace both parts as they're only held on with a bolt or two, and it's a plug/socket joint to disconnect & re-connect.

Problem resolved!
It turned out to be the Crank Sensor.
Thanks to everyone for your help
