Hello all,
When drving home from work today I was hit by a Fiesta - awful driving on his part. The driver made a run for it.
I got his number plate and told the Police immediately. No witnesses, though, as I tried to chase him!
What are the chances of:
1. The Police tracing him
2. Him having any insurance
3. My car getting fixed and me not losing my no claims
There is superficial damage to the front driver's side and the tracking is out +++. I phoned my insurer and they said I'm not entitled to anything until I either make a claim at the expense of my no claims or the Police find the driver. Theoretically, if I take it to my local SEAT garage and get it fixed (at least the tracking) is the insurance company likely to pay for it retrospectively should everything work out OK?
Thanks for your help,
Rob.

1. Provided the vehicle is registered in his name, tracing him will be no problem. I wouldn't hold your breath on that, though.
2. An incredible number of drivers have no insurance, I forget the percentage but your mate seems to fit the bill as one of these.
3. Provided the driver is apprehended and prosecuted, I believe the insurance companies have a fund to compensate the victims of this type of incident without loss, though others on here will know more about that than me.
Best of luck.

A) If the police trace him and he is insured you can claim off his insurance
B) If they trace him and he's not insured they'll do him for leaving the scene of an accident, driving with no insurance and probably driving without due care and attention - net result? 3 points, £100 fine and told not to do it again
C) If they can't trace him - your up the creek so to speak!
If the outcome is B or C you should contact the M.I.B as they are there exactly for this purpose.

For compensation through Motor Insurance Bureau in respect of damage to property by untraced or uninsured drivers read up on this site:

Great minds work alike Blue...
Should have added IIRC there is a very short time limit on making a claim with MiB so get in early.

Thanks for the above.
If they do manage to trace him, what happens if he denies hitting me or claims it was my fault?
Unfortunately, I made a very brief attempt to follow him instead of getting details of witnesses, which I now greatly regret!

The fact that he's done a runner will be enough evidence of blame, I should think.

he should have some corresponding marks on his car too, unless he's popped to the spray/bodyshop in the meantime
