Cam or Dizzy? Ford Escort - samsdodgybloke
My 1989 CVH MFi has developed a strange noise....it sounds like a belt slipping and is only occassional. After searching for the cause, using stethascope, I can deduce the noise is coming from the cam or distributor. First thoughts were the Release Bearing in the clutch, now I think I know where it's actually from I am totally baffled. Replacing head gasket this weekend as is leaking oil severely from front of head, if anyone has any ideas then pls enlighten me and end my suffering!!!LMAO!

These engines don't have a distributor, so that's ruled out! IIRC there is a belt just for the alternator and a cambelt for everything else. Do you know when the cambelt was last replaced?

I beg to differ. The 1989 CVH MFi did have an HT distributor. It was the short version, with just a TFI module, and no vacuum advance unit.

Possible sources of noise from this unit:-

1) contact between rotor arm tip and cap. This can be due to worn shaft, or damage caused by cap contacting something in engine bay on severe engine rock. (The cap deflects as it is retained with spring clips).

2) wear of the dog drive from camshaft end to distributor.



However, cam belt noise still a possibility in this case. Remember to renew water pump at the same time. It is drived off this belt, and they were know to seize and "manchester" the belt.

Over tight cam belt will cause this..If the noise wasnt there before H/G change.Thats what I would go for.Easy done on CVH

I recently cured a fan belt type of squeal from a bosch distributor. It was very noisy when cold and stopped abruptly after about ten mins running.
A drop of oil in the bearing (bush) just under the rotor arm did the job.
