Hi chaps,
Just bought a Vectra C on a 04 plate, 14000 miles. The problem i have is that when braking at slow speeds i get a grating noise, almost like the pads are worn to the metal, no noise at higher braking speeds. The car was bought from a main dealer last saturday and had a service, i'm assuming the brakes were looked at. Anyone got any ideas before i go back with it, so that i am not feed B/S.
Any help appreciated.

have a quick look at the pads yourself? or call the aa out and let them have a look

Could be a number of things.
Has the vehicle been stood for a while between previous owner selling and you buying?
Could simply be that the brake discs have a rust layer on them and within a week or so they'll self clean. I'm refering more to the rear discs than the front as the rears aren't used so heavily as the fronts.

Well DD, now that you mention it,
The car has stood for about 4 weeks and over the last week since buying the car the noise has seemed to quieten down, still there although not as bad as at first. It is booked in with the dealer for them to have a look. I know it is a simple matter, but i have just bought the car, so why should i have to start looking at it when it should be tip top.
Thanks for your advice.

It will likely be surface rust. You should find that once you've applied the brakes a few times each journey the noise will disappear as you will have removed the layer. The discs tend to develop a coating after a few hours depending on rain/humidity. I checked with my main dealer when my car was in for its first service last month.
If its the fronts you suspect there is a wear sensor I believe on most models.
Apart from that how do you like the Vectra?

I have the Elegance package, 1.8 16v 5dr.
Mucho improvement on the Vectra B (club) that i had before. I am quite tickled with wipers that come on their own when it rains.
The trip computer i like. It also a more refined ride, doesn't seem to lean as much in corners, very smooth. The drivers seat is also height/squab adjustable, excellent idea.
The only gripe i have is the toy spare wheel, why Vauxhall couldn't supply a steel rim and tyre for a spare, like my last Vectra, i don't know. Apart from that, i am well impressed (subject to change).

Was at the main dealer this morning and both rear disc were just starting to clear a layer of rust. Dealer decided to change pads but couldn't do it under warranty without authorisation from Vauxhall, i then argued that i had the car 1 week and the noise was there when the car was test driven and was told it would be sorted. This seemed to have the desired effect and the rear pads were duly changed.
The fitter also said that the Vectra C models tend to eat rear pads faster than front ones.
Thanks for all advice given chaps.
