My son's Citroen ZX turbo diesel appears to be losing water although no puddles or tell tale "water marks" seem to be present, except a bit round the rad cap. The water is not at all foamy and does not smell of combustion. It does not overheat either and runs at a constant 85 to 90c. Would a new rad cap fix it?

Hi
A new rad cap would be worth a try for the sake of £5. Firstly though, perform a pressure test by running the engine til the cooling fan comes on with the car stationary and if there is hissing and/or water being forced out through the top then it is probably the rad cap. Also, it may be worth bleeding the cooling system, using a header tank and opening the bleed screws to remove any trapped air. Any air in the system would cause the system to pressurise more than normal, thus forcing water out through the rad cap.
Hope this helps

Martin

if you have an independent you trust, they should have a Sykes Pickavant or similar radiator cap tester to double check. Same tool can be used to pressurise the system to look for leaks.

If it isn't the rad cap (and in a way I hope it is!) then I would suspect the radiator (I'm on my third in my 1995 ZX TD Est), the heater matrix and the head gasket, in that order.
A slight radiator leak may show up only when you stop after a run on a cold, damp day. A few wisps of steam from under the bonnet give the game away.

Thanks for all the info guys. I've replaced the rad cap and (touch wood) the level seems to have stabilised. I'll keep a watching brief on the radiator and the other things as well.
