Recently my mums car broke down and I have been trying to get it back running for her.
The car is turning over but just won't start. I have replaced the alternator, plugs, leads, and distributor arm/cap. I'm all out of ideas.
I hope someone can help.

Could you confirm the year, and the symptoms when the car stopped (ie suddenly, gradually) and had anything been done to the car just before it stopped (petrol added, maintenance)
When you turn the engine over, does the rotor arm rotate?

Its a M reg.
I have been informed that the car jolted and then gradually died. Nothing had been done to the car before this.
Apparently there has been an ongoing problem with the battery light coming on intermitantly when driving. Also within the last week before the break down there were some problems with idling, as if it wanted to cut out.
I'm not sure about the rotor arm, I would need to check this out tomorrow morning.
Thanks for the quick response.

Hi,
I have had a similar problem, if anyone gives you any ideas i'd be grateful if you could let me know.
Thanks

I took another look today and the rotor arm isn't turning, so that will be why it isn't starting.
Maybe its the distributor itself, if not I won't look too much further into it as it will start to get costly.

I suggest you check the cam belt as it sounds as though it has snapped. Regards Peter

Must admit, that's why I asked.
Anyone know if it is an "interference" engine, or whether he may have got away with it?

Me thinks very likely bent valves ;cylinder head off.I have done a few of these & at least 2 valves have been damaged.
