Fiesta 1.4 with Weber TLD carb. I think my automatic choke has failed, (difficult starting but no problem when running or starting from hot). Am I right in thinking the choke butterfly should be seen to be closed when the engine is cold (with air filter cover removed) ? Mine remains firmly open.

Yes, it should be closed. It may be easier/cheaper to fit a manual choke conversion unless someone comes along with a quick fix in a minute---
I think it works from a wax capsule and a carb specialist may well advise on spares for it.

I'm surprised the car still runs without any choke at all! I would have expected hesitation when cold and willingness to stall at idle
Are there any external linkages that look like they could be lubricated? I had a problem with a manual choke on a Weber sticking and lubricated all the linkages with engine oil and has been fine since.

Thanks guys, I've fixed it, at least for the moment. The choke is driven by a bi-metallic spring in a housing. Externally there is a pressed steel stepped cam which has an idle adjustment against it. When I flipped this screw clear of the cam the choke butterfly immediately snapped shut. I also realised that flooring the throttle also causes this screw to move off the cam. Engine started immediately and during warm up the choke butterfly slowly opened and also started to close when the engine cooled down. I suppose if it happened once it can happen again but at least I've got a way to get started.
