My wife has set her heart of on a used X5, dealer cars are heading into low 20's for petrol 2001 model (not loaded with satnav stuff), are there any view of whether depreciation from this point on is going to be better or worse than say an equivalent 5 series estate, will it retain its image and be a vehicle that people reach for and hence keep prices firm or are the petrols unwanted by used buyers who pay the extra for a 3.0d.
Any views on the 3.0 vs the 4.4 I understand mpg remarkably similar, likewise man vs auto (i enjoy the steptronic in our current 5 series but wonder if in a big 3.0 4x4 the manual would offer more control/mpg)
Any other ownership experiences much appreciated, I must admit I'm struggling to make a compelling ownership case myself (not that that makes any difference, she sold a 4.6 RR and bought a Z3!). I hope they would their value well from now expecially being the cheapest entry into X5 land. Any one heard of LPG conversions on the 4.4 that would double effective MPG subject to Gordon! Thanks, Ian

Ian,
Conventional wisdom is that X5s with auto, leather & satnav hold value, others don't. Mind you, low 20s for a 2001 car is pretty good going!
The diesel is certainly the tempting one of the range. It has the torque to grab the huge lump of metal by the scruff of the neck and drag it down the road, but mpg is acceptable. I think the mpg of the 3.0i and the 4.4i are similar because the 3.0i has to work so hard that it comes down to that of the 4.4i.
Mrs P's X5 is a diesel auto. I drive it into the garage with 1" spare on the passenger side* without difficulty, so control is not really a problem for us.
We really appreciate ours.

LOL! Yeah - I bet it'll retain its image! Don't think that'll keep prices firm though.
