The most spotterish qustion ever? - Retro
As some of you know, I have just bought a 1983 XR3i. You've missed out on the micky taking thread by a few days I am afraid!

Courtesy of eBay I received a roadtest of said car done by Autocar and on looking at the test spec it says that the turning circle is 33ft 8in turning left and 34ft dead turning right. Why is this?

I am a real car buff and have never noticed magazines doing this test before. Perhaps testers lives aren't that glamorous after all.

Between walls or kerbs?

Left or right hand drive ?

Quite common to do this test years ago, and not unheard of for the results to be different each side due to wheelarch intrusions from the engine, limitations on track rod movement etc

Right hand drive and between kerbs.

Also gives humidity on day of test, wind level, barometer reading, type of underbody protection (bitumastic and PVC), jack type and type of windscreen.

Loads more thorough than todays tests!

Could the difference in turning circle be down to differing length of drive shaft? I know that the Mk2 Fiesta had one drive shaft longer than the other, turning / cornering left was fine, turning right was quite different (apart from the direction!) and slower if memory serves.

I doubt it. Things that affect turning circle are mainly the track rods, as mentioned, and anything else in the steering setup. The main thing of course is the steering wheel which should turn exactly the same number of degrees one way as the other, assuming zero degrees is dead straight.

I had an XR3i round about then. It deosn't have 666 in the registration by any chance ? If it does, sorry but I bent it a bit !
