I have had a w reg merc c200 for about 6 months (diesel)and the service record says it was serviced about a year ago. I have changed the engine oil but the service indicator has remained inactive. Anyone any thoughts on this?.

No idea for the Merc, but on the Galaxy absolutely it is not reliable. So unreliable that they even tell you how to reset it in the manual.
And my mate, the Ford Franchise man, says that it should be totally ignored on Galaxys which should be serviced according to the appropriate mileage irrespective of the activities of the light or its current enthusisam, or lack thereof, for a service.

Have had no problems at all with the BMW service countdown. I'm aware of the algorithms used and they seem to be borne out in practice, 100% consistent.
One could argue against service intervals exceeding 10,000 miles - but that's a different argument.
