service warning lights..OK? - barney100
I have a warning device on my car which is to let me know when the service is due.(merc 220 diesel) It has done 10,000 miles at least since it saw a garage and I am concerned that this thing may be faulty. I changed the oil as a precaution but the 'you need a service' sign stays off. Any thoughts?

Depends on your driving. If you are doing a high mileage with lots of open roads etc, it could be up to 20,000miles before the light comes on. No harm in changing oil though as you will have read countless times on here before.

I had a C200 and the light came on after 10,000miles but I did a lot of urban driving.

i thought they lit up when you first switch ignition on a bit like abs or airbag lights , lets you know it's working, then stays on or off depending on servicing requirements. i could be totally wrong mind....cheers...keo

My E270 went 18,000 miles before asking for its first service; I do about 30,000 miles a year, mostly fastish A and B roads, with some motorway driving. Unless you do a lot of urban driving I wouldn't expect it to ask for a service until way over 10,000 miles, so probably nothing to worry about...

my ml 270 has just told it needs a service as the last one was two years ago as others have said it is either the sort of mileage you do in my case about 5000 a year but i change the oil every 6 months or failing that every 2 years.
