Dealers Gossip Network - tack
In June this year I PX'd my BMW Compact for another new car. I took a few weeks to make a decision, deciding what I fancied in exchange and trying to get the best possible PX.

One dealer told me that my car was getting a reputation because dealers put the px car into a database for other dealers to see who may be interested in putting in a bid for it. This, allegedly, helps them to come up with a px price if I wanted to deal. In the event, I did get a decent deal.

Is there such a dealer on-line database?

Yes, but we don't really use it in our particular, garage, we're flooded with stock as it is so don't need to buy any in, and anything that we want rid of just gets sent to the auction.

You'd be amazed what we come across, a common one is looking at previous searches on the HPi system, most dealers will HPi any part ex, we often find customers who claim they have never had any recent offers on their car (so no idea what it is worth, they want to see what we come up with), but when we HPi it the system shows two or three recent searches by members of the Motor Trade, there could be another explanation, but unlikely. :-)

Yes there are that sort of database floating around - one such thing is www.autotrade-mail.com or another possibility is that the dealers you have visited have been calling the various people who advertise in glass's and cap offering to underwrite part exchanges. If your car is rare or easily identifiable then they will quickly cotton to the fact your doing the rounds of the dealers.

I wonder why people bother to lie? I've been asked that question by dealers before, and have just said yes, I've asked elsewhere, you tell me your offer and THEN I'll tell you the others.

Who cares how many other offers have been made, my offer would be based on how I see the p/x car and the deal as it stands.

dealers are not as clever as they think

have had instances of "competing dealers" making the same p ex offer, only to find out later they were owned by the same people and were sharing info on recent offers made, simply broke out of their little network by going elsewhere, good luck to them but no thanks

however when buying a nissan and knowing pretty darn well value of p ex, realistic price to change etc etc, was amazed at first nissan dealer not budging and asking for 2 k more than a sensible deal, went down the road to another nissan garage owned by the same people who immediately agreed to my offer - who got a not hassle signature straight away

very strange thing car buying

some dealers are like that.

general rule of thumb.

if your car is pacific - goes striaght the auction

japanese - depending on model (for example, civic ype r's , accords, yaris ) and mileage below 50k - we will offer it around.

european cars - generally offered around up to 3 years or 60k.

anymore, and straight to auction again.

any import cars go striaght to auction.
