The car has been standing idle for 2years -waiting for daughter to pass her test. As a result of the car standing idle I started changing some of the fluids and components. Trying to turn the engine by hand to obtain tdc I found I could only turn the camshaft sprocket approx 270 degrees. I've checked the cars in neutral, removed the spark plugs, even had the daughter depress the clutch whilst I tried to turn the engine. Has anyone any ideas as to what could stop the engine turning?

You've probably come up against a rust ridge in the cylinder bores ...... pour some freeing lube down each spark plug entry and when you turn the engine over by hand work it both ways when it gets stiff , I would suggest that you turn it on the crankshaft bolt not the camshaft , if that doesn't work it's probably safe to turn the crankshaft back from where the engine locks put some easy start into the bores , re-fit the plugs and attempt to start.....
Good luck
