Mondeo Estate - thumping and squealing - Ian71
Our Mondeo estate has over the last few months developed a 'thump=thump-thump' sound on smooth road surfaces, eminating from the rear of the car. There is nothing obvious that would casue this. Also, when turning or pulling away from a stop you get a squeal from the back of the car, on one side or the other that sounds 'mechanical' - like brakes binding or something. It seems to do this more so when under load, or strangly enough, when the weather is cold.

The rear tyres are still the original, so are now 4 years old, but are in good condition. The car has only done 53,000 miles and is a 2000 model, but the last of the old shape.

Does anybody have any ideas?

Thanks in anticipation

I don't know what the squealing noise could be but the thumping could be a tyre that has delaminated. I had that on an old Ford Orion years ago. It creates a flat spot on the tyre thus causing the thumping noise on smooth surfaces.

Any feeling of the back "skipping" sideways when truning a corner on unevern surfaces? could be a damper gone allowing the wheel to jump up and down

hi i also have a 2000 mondeo ghia estate the squealing noise is rear pads i know this because mine done the exact same thing just after i bought it , i took it in to the garage and the mechanic who came out in the car with me driving instantly said rear pads , i thought it was more like a bearing whine only noticeable at slow speeds like walking pace , but fair play it was pads and they are designed to do this before they wear out.
the thumping noise sorry i dont know but sounds like bushes of some description.....cheers...keo

Does the thumping noise increase in frequency as the speed rises? If so then I agree with Dave, this sounds like a tyre on the way out. I had the same thing happen some years ago. Not sure about the squealing - this could be entirely separate. If coming from the same source however, is it a bearing going home?
