Had injectors re-tipped and changed oil and filters. It still doesn't want to start properly taking quite a bit of cranking and blumes of white smoke after it catches. Once its warmed up it runs fine and doesn't smoke. The only problem is a slightly lumpy idle which occurs after about a minute of sitting still. Nothing major, just a slight cough every 10 seconds or so.
I'm reluctant to think its compression a)because i can't bear to and b) because it seems to have loads of poke when driving. Could it be valve clearances? I'd really appreciate some help on this as it's driving me up the wall! Thanks a lot

Lots of threads about similar problems/queries.
I was told sometime ago by a local diesel specialist that they find the clearances close up enough to hinder starting at about 100K.
Fairly straightforward DIY job to check em, but a much longer job to adjust

Try pumping the fuel primer before you start it - it may just be suffering from an air leak. White smoke indicates though that fuel is reaching the engine, so maybe not. Have the glow plugs been changed?
Valve clearances as said easy to check, mare to adjust as the camshaft has to come out - sometimes several times....

Is it illogical? It must be Citroen....

I've had the air leak prob suggested to me already by a helpful chap in a garage, reckons he's just fixed exactly that on the same car as mine just this week. The car really honks of diesel after it starts and blows clouds of white smoke but settles down as soon as it is warm and doesn't smoke at all.
How hard should the fuel pump balloon go when the system is fully pressurised. I seem to be able to keep pumping and pumping mine without a great deal of difference. It doesn't seem to make it easier to start either. Bit new to diesels so appreciate any suggestions! Thanks.

Sounds more like glow plugs..
