The battery in my MB E320 Coupé is just giving out after eight years (I think it's the original). Checking around, I find (incl. VAT):
Halfords 75Ah (HB096) £64.99
Bosch 72Ah from GFS (German, French, Swedish) £52.88
MB dealer 62Ah £79.59 (including £13.10 for acid as a separate item)
MB dealer 100Ah alternative £121.58 (ditto)
Bosch it is then, and not just on price grounds.
Acid as a separate item?

Try for a 'Bosch Silver' from a local factor. I think the Bosch websites lists their stockists and gives battery details.
I got one early this year for a C200 - cost me about £35 (was in January I think).
I like the idea of paying for the acid as a separate item. Maybe they also charge for the bubbles?

If the terminal connections are the same, See how much a "Go" battery from a Vauxhall dealer willcost you.

Just thought I'd add to the people who say Bosch/Varta Silver are good (same battery different label)
They are very cheap at Costco if you're a member.

I also agree with the notion that Bosch batteries are good. I have just baught one from Costco and it only cost me £20 all in. They seem to be very robust and can give very healthy outputs at very low temps.

As mentioned above, get one from costco - have good prices on bosch silver.
Alternatively - try a delphi battery - autoexpress did a test on several batteries - you should find it on the website.
Delphi Freedom - can get from auto factors - god price excellent performance.

I think any battery you get mail order will be 'dry' and need filling with acid. Quite a few places that sell batteries have empty ones in stock to avoid having to charge them once in a while.
A 'dry' battery will be fully charged once the acid is poured in.

Yeah, I know this Martin, but I just thought the idea of charging for the acid as a seperate item was a little amusing, especially at over £13.

I recently had to buy a new battery for our old Volvo. I was tempted by the prices for Bosch in Euro Car Parts but thought that the postage/delivery on such a heavy item would kill any savings so plumped for a Halfords ultimately.
The original Volvo battery had lasted nine years - impressive I thought. I had a Samson battery on a Renault 21 diesel once - that was a good quality battery
