Music to drive to? - tyre tread
This thought was sparked by the appeal for opinion poll subjects:

Do you listen more to Radio, Tape, CD music or CD books?

What's your favourite track/artist to drive to - I love a nice windy back road and Meatloaf blasting from the stereo.

What's yours?
Music to drive to? - Hugo {P}
Good thread TT.

Well, as none of our vehicles has a cd player, cds are eliminated.

Neither of us can stand the sound of tapes rattling around every time SWMBO drives into a wall or similar.

So, that leaves - erm the radio. SWMBO listens to Radio 2, the safe haven for 'older generation' (40 yrs plus) Radio 1 listeners. I listen to good old Pirate FM covering West Devon and most of Cornwall, where the hills don't stop you getting a good signal. Where the signal is lost I just listen to a load os hissing.

I bought a 6 disc changer and listen to...well...2 discs. I have a somewhat odd taste in music ranging from Pink Floyd to...The Police - I kid you not. Even a little Level 42! I'm 19 by the way.

On the way to Uni in the morning, I've taken to listening to Alan Beswick on BBC GMR - usually hate talking shows but I find his cutting remarks get me in the mood for Uni!

Ah Mr Bewick - He used to have a late night phone in programme on Red Rose Radio (Preston) in the early 80's. He was really cutting and would not under ANY circumstances allow Liverpudlians to speak.

He was positively rude but always knowledgable and I really enjoyed listening to him while driving home from the girlfriend's
Music to drive to? - tyre tread
That should of course read "Beswick"

>>He used to have a late night phone in programme on Red Rose Radio (Preston)>>

Used to work in Preston and knew Alan; lovely man, gregarious and highly intelligent.

His often controversial - but always hugely entertaining - talk show was probably the basis for James Whale's similar approach on TalkSport.

As for my car, like my home hi-fi, it's almost permanently tuned to Radio two; a click of a button on Saturdays brings in Radio Five Live.

Quite enjoy 5 live which offers an unchallenging and often quite amusing slant on the day's news...often what's required after the hassle of the office.

I listen to 675 MW (Eastern England only) highly recommended for a thirty something, it's Arrow classic rock just don't ask me what they're saying inbetween. Drive many cars during day so no cd's.
Music to drive to? - PhilW
Depends on mood and time doesn't it? 5 Live for sport, 2 for Wogan, Jonathan Ross, 4 sometimes, local Radio also. Tapes? Anything from Pink Floyd, to Howling Wolf, Clapton and I like Abba and some classical (Beethoven/Mozart) to drive to!! Radio 1 is a definite no-no, anything but that.
My wife mocks me because she says I know no music after 1974! I don't care
Music to drive to? - mark999
Definitely Meat Loaf M8
Music to drive to? - Stuartli
Love Wogan - been listening to his morning show for decades.

Still get a laugh even now some 20 or more years on when Terry read out a letter from a listener who said his wife was known as The Slough Turnoff - it wouldn't have been anything like as funny if it had been any other town name.

CD/MP3 Player, Radio - normally 5 Live or Talk Sport. Then there are the local commercial stations PowerFM/Wave/Ocean - which ever one isnt playing the same stupid set of adverts (PS I'm learning the delights of the steering wheel mounted controls on my new 120d, which make its easier to channel surf when they arrive !!).

PS does anyone else speed up when THE Fleetwood Mac track comes on - you know the one which the Beeb used to use for F1 ?

Good topic!

Not quite at the big 40 yet(!), but I really like Terry in the morning. Ken Bruce is good too. Steve Wright (factiods? eh?)gets on my nerves so often switch to Simon Mayo pm and then Peter Allen & Jane Garvey for drive on the way home. After that, usually radio 4.

I do listen to my own music in the car, but find the BBC output on 2,4 and 5 suits me. Commercial radio with the ads totally does my head in - Virgin play great music but the ads make it unlistenable after 20 minutes. And don't start me on the contemporary Smashy & Nicey local radio DJs!!

There should be laws against phone in radio shows though. Cheap radio to make any journey longer....

Music to drive to? - Robin Reliant
Drive Time with Johnny Walker is my favourite. I sometimes spend the day looking forward to Cruising just after the six o'clock news when he plays three tracks suggested by listeners. Always some good stuff on there, and I like the way he opens the show with a foot-tapper before any chat. Shankillman on the business spot is always worth a listen too, and JW is a biker and a Stones fan which makes it even better.

Otherwise Bob Harris with his C&w show. Can't stand Steve Wright, he is a celebrity groupie with a fixation on non-entities like Jordan and Posh.

Teenage wasteland by The Who.

The finest driving track there is. IMO

I wonder how many accidents are caused by people's driving style altering depending on the music they are listening to? Satisfaction or Won't Get fooled Again for example, always make me want to put my foot down and I get annoyed if I have to slow down or stop while they are on.

Only instance I can quote is the brother of someone I was teaching to drive at the time. It was the day of Diana's funeral and he was driving through Ballards Road in Dagenham when Elton's Candle in the Wind tribute came on. Reception was a little bit fuzzy and he was fiddling with the tuner when he clipped a parked car, lost control and hit two other parked vehicles. The fire brigade had to cut him free, though he was fortunately unhurt. He never admitted to the police what the real cause was and ended up with a Due Care conviction.

I find cars such a poor place to listen to music that I mostly use my radio for speech programmes and traffic reports on RDS. Highly compressed music such as much modern stuff works OK (albeit at higher volume) but music with a large dynamic range such as classical stuff with quiet passages is a waste of time, so much of the subtlety gets drowned out by mechanical and road noise.

The Hollies-The Air that I breathe.
Music to drive to? - Ian (Cape Town)
Normally I just have the radio playing, there are a few semi-decent stations about, including one called Radio 2000, which plays 'classics' for much of the day, and has the advantage of NO adverts or announcers ... Just music!!!

Just been in Johannesburg for a week or so, driving a hound of a Nissan Almera ... underpowered rubbish!
However, the thing comes with a CD player which is really good, so myself and my colleague packed a few CDs, and gave it some stick with:
Kinks Ultimate Collection
Sex Pistols: Never mind the Moderators (*grin*)
Stones Hot Rocks
Buddy Guy and Junior Wells: Drinkin' TNT' n' Smokin' Dynamite

Time for me to rip the old Kenwood tapedeck out, and buy myself a CD player for Xmas!
Music to drive to? - Roberson
Driving in rush hour, I tend not to listen to anything, but otherwise I nearly always listen to CDs

Anything from the 1980s will suit me down to the ground, but I dont really have a favourite track to DRIVE to.

Listening to the radio, I try to tune into Century FM (80s music again) but cant stand chit-chat or adverts.
Music to drive to? - Billsboy
I agree with Wogan en route to work and Walker going home.
If I'm out and about in the afternoon, then Steve Wright is not my cup of tea and I like something relaxing, Norah Jones for instance.
When out with SHMBO, our tastes are diametrically opposite and we travel in silence, except Saturday mornings when J Ross appeals to both of us.
Music to drive to? - Happy Blue!
No ones said it, so I'll be the first - Radio 4 mostly, except during Wimmins Hour when i go over to R2 or ClassicFM. I noticed recently that ClassicFM has a stronger signal output that BBC. Far higher volume with CFM than BBC without changing the radio settings. Maybe to cope with quieter passages in calssical music?

The best piece of music for a winding country road at high speed - Mozart; Overture to the Marriage of Figaro. Not a good piece to have on when stuck in traffic jams on the way home.

Great stuff but also try Beethovens 'ode to joy' as reworked by Danny Elfman for the movie 'A Clockwork orange' This can be listened to in traffic or the open road, it doesn't really matter.

For solitary driving, especially on long journeys you can't beat a good audio book. Nothing like seting off at six in the morning with a box of 12 tapes from the library and 500 miles to drive. Changing scenery in front of the windscreen and behind your eyes.

The tape drive exchange at some motorway service stations is also good. You pay about a tenner for the first tape or cd you buy then change it as often as you like for about £3. Find myself navigating on the motorway by Welcome Break service stations, slowing down as necessary to get to the end of the tape before I arrive.

With a good book playing you don't mind getting caught in a traffic jam and I find I don't speed as often. They are the complete antidote to road rage. Nothing like a juicy murder mystery to take your mind off the idiots on the road.

Otherwise I'm another Radio 2 listener. I like Wogan a lot, Ken Bruce plays great music but isn't as funny as he thinks he is and Jeremy Vine is nearly always interesting. Steve Wright was funny when I was 17 but that was 20 years ago and I've heard it all now. If I was in charge I'd give Richard Allinson the afternoon slot. He has one of the best voices on the wireless and always plays great music.

Instead I switch to Radio 4 for the Archers and the afternoon play.
