Mk III Golf P Plate 1.6 engine. A strange fault where the engine appears not to warm up and between 6 to 9 minutes into the journey the engine will just stall once, it will normally willingly restart and not fail again on that journey. On other trips the gauge quickly rises to a normal temp and never stall/cuts out. It this a sensor I’ve checked the sensors for the guy and they appear to be OK so I suspect the barrel type stat fitted to these models although the cool engine causing a stall when you still have some throttle on seems very odd. My other thought is the Hall effect sensor in the Dizzy but it restarts immediately on most occasions. The owner has experienced the car not restarting on a couple of occasions and one such breakdown caused a AA guy to change the coil ! wrong. Can you purchase just the induction ring for the diz with the cost of the whole dizzy. ?Regards Peter

Hi,

I can't help much with the problem of it stalling, but I enquired about just replacing the faulty parts of my otherwise ok distributer. The VW specialist said that they may be able to get the parts, but It was so faffy to change the innards that it would be cheaper if I just replaced the whole lot.

The parts for my engine (AAU) were seeming not available on the net, but the larger VAG engines seemed to be catered for over in the US (in terms of internal distributer parts)

What does the car do when it stalls? Does it judder, go lumpy etc? How readily does it re start after stalling?

Hope this is of some use

What engine type do you have? There should be a white label stuck in the spare wheel well with a 3 letter code next to Eng/Mot.
