OK, another change of career beckons.
Have £3-4k to spend, will be doing around 40k miles per year, New Forest to Reading daily commute!!! (looking forward to that, not!).
Any ideas what to go for, must be a diesel and have air-con, thats the only two things I am definite about.
Was thinking Mondeo?, Focus?, go on tell me I'm mad!
Cheers all.

A recent thread discussed much the same thing albeit at around a 5K budget and then veered off course on to mpg which will soon become something dear to your heart and wallet. 40,000 miles a year in a car giving you 40 mpg will cost you at todays prices £750+ more each year to fuel than one capable of 50mpg. Considering how frequently questions on the theme of very economical commuter cars occur, perhaps it would be useful (mod's??) to have a listing of cars from the last few years that will realistically achieve 50 mpg. Particularly 50mpg 75mph motorway cruisers.
Can't nominate any from personal experience, our 2004 Micra 1.4 does 48 mpg at 70mph, but drops to 44mpg at 75-78mph. Our old 1998 Peugeot 406 1.9TD managed about 44mpg at 75mph. Our 2000 Petrol Mondeo 1989cc seems to get close to 40mpg at 75mph.
