I'm having problems with my imobiliser key fob. It has become some what tempremental, sometimes working sometimes not. Ford guys say buy a new one the battery is fine, cost £50 + £50 programming fee, what a rip off. Any one know an alternate (legal) option

The keys are expensive but if you have the spare with the blue chip in then you don't need to get it programmed at the dealers as you can do it yourself with the car from what I recall.

It's the central locking I want to work properly. It only seems to deleted about when it's raining cats and dogs or is it just my perception. I have no problem manually unlocking etc, just want the convenience of pressing the button.

Sorry - shoudl have been more clear. If you want a new key fob then (I think) you will have to buy it from Ford but you don't need to get them to reprogram it. I am 95% sure if you have the second key (no buttons) then you can use the car to do it. I think this is detailed in the manual.

As Adski says, if you have two keys already programmed to your car then you can buy a new remote fob from Ford for (i think) around £40 and program it by following the procedure in the owners manual.

I would be surprised if your key is faulty if the problem only occurs when it is raining. That seems more like a problem on the car-side of the electronics.

However, if you have a second key which works without problem, then obviously the first key must be faulty. But you should confirm this point before parting with your money.

Also, check the instructions in your manual to see if you really need to have two working keys before you can program another key. My Ford Technical Information Systems CD says you don't need two working keys, but this may not apply to all Focuses.

Don't forget to program all your keys (old and new) in the same session, or your old keys will stop working.

I think I need to clarify a bit.

The three button key is tempremental, it is only my perception that it messes up when it rains, any weather, rain or shine and it decides whether to work or not.

all keys unlock (manually) and start the car without problem, so it appears to be a central locking issue.

I am just looking for a cheaper option than what the ford guys quoted me for a new 3 button key and programming of the said key

See if these people are cheaper:-

" ... My Ford Technical Information Systems CD says you don't need two working keys ..."

Whoops, I think I am wrong again!

I was looking at the instructions for programming keys to lock/unlock the doors. This only requires one working key.

There are separate instructions to program keys to deactivate the immobiliser. These instructions aren't shown on the TIS CD, but should be in the Owners Guide, and probably require two working keys.

If you haven't got two working keys, only a Ford dealer can fully program the new key, by using Ford's diagnostic equipment.

For people who have got two working keys, this seems like a good reason to buy a third key just in case one gets lost sometime.

As suggested above ,if you have 2 working keys then you can program a new key yourself by following instructions in handbook. The only problem might be if you have a "fleet" model with prevents you doing this other than by Ford diag system.
