Good morning all,
When I was getting petrol before, I noticed that diesel, at this particular garage was 89.?p a litre and petrol was 'only' 85.?p a litre.
Not really a question but I thought diesel would always be cheaper than petrol.
How long do you think it will be before we see £1 a litre?

Not long if you're a Shell Optimax user like me. I'm already paying 90p.
I don't see why diesel would be cheaper since I believe it's attracted slightly greater duty increases than petrol over the last five years. I don't see why it would be significantly more expensive either.

Well, I can't help feeling just a little bit smug - for months fuel prices have been well over the 80p a litre mark, with the average price here seeming to hover between 86-89p a litre. I'm still only paying 75p a litre for biodiesel, and getting better performance and economy out of it than derv as well. My supplier has been improving his production techniques over the past few years and the difference between biodiesel and derv is even more noticeable now than it ever was. In total, I'm pushing the 100k mile mark on the stuff by now - 46k of those on one car.

In your opinion is this fuel worth the extra outlay? I would like to know as I still use supermarket fuel, but add Redex diesel treatment (which works out at roughly 0.05p a litre on top of the fuel price).
I am asking as am a complete ignoramus on these matters- and have had lots of conflicting stories. Many say supermarket fuel is inferior to regular filling stations- yet have also heard that the oil firms such as Esso are their suppliers.
What I would like to know is as a high mileage driver would using a 'premium' fuel provide any benefits over using additives to supermarket fuel.
In response to the first thread- is interesting to see the difference in price of where I live (close to Bristol) to where I work (Mid Devon) which can be far more expensive.

Adam - if you had a diesel that you were taking for a MOT tomorrow and wanted to fill it with 'la diesel de la diesel', you could nip down to the BP garage near sainsbury's and fill up with Ultimate diesel at 92.9p a litre...
p.s. - if you see (or hear) a skoda tomorrow morning going down Tanhouse at 29mph in first, you know who that'll be
|
I dont know what everyone is complaining about with fuel ... my first car did 20 mpg ( mk1 Ford Escort ) then I had a landie - 8mpg ... 911 18mpg .. when you have done all that and then move to a 30mpg any price seems fine to me ;o)
|
Diesel has been slightly more expensive than petrol for quite some time now.
Supermarket fuel supplies come from the same sources as the major brands - the difference is almost certainly in the additives provided by BP, Shell etc.
There has been advice in the past to occasionally, if you normally use supermarket fuel, to top up to the brim with a "brand" name; Texaco used to be the petrol most recommended to use because it was supposed to clean the engine.

Actually, I want it to do the job of Andrews Liver Salts...
(clear all the carp out of the system)
|
But Borasport, I've heard things about that garage and the fuel they supply ;-)
Besides, they always poach the trade off the Shell Garage further up. (Incidently, that garage has different priced fuel to the Shell one in Billinge)
P.S. - Please go for the MOT after 10 so as not to wake me up...better make it 11.

I'm so considerate - 11 oclock it is
(Ashton MOT Centre at Bryn Cross - they don't do anything but MOTs and have done my cars for as long as they've been in business - can't recommend them enough)
|
That's worth thinking about actually - I don't think I'm too far off mine to be honest.
Then I'll be the one doing the Italian Tune up down Tanhouse!

right - dinner breaks over, back on your heads !

Shell Optimax is the same price as normal petrol diesel, certainly round here (Carlisle) anyway - same as cheapest supermarket.
BP Ultimate Diesel is approx 4p per litre more expensive, but worth it in my opinion (but possibly not in the opinion of our Finance Director, seeing as the firm picks up the tab!).
don't forget good old

Been paying 91.9 for BP Ultimate diesel lately .........

I've been hit hard by fuel prices this year. In addition to the rises because of the Middle East situation, now that Safeways have been taken over by Morrisons the money off if you can produce a till receipt from your weekly shop has been phased out. That was a 12p per litre rise in one hit.
|
Safeways/Morrisons in Tavistock 85.9p per litre for diesel.

When we bought our first BX diesel in 1987, I remember being very smug about the fact that diesel was about 35p a gallon (8p/litre?) cheaper than petrol. As diesel has grown in popularity the gov has spotted a way of raising more tax - or is that just being cynical?
|
no PhilW, think you have hit the nail *bang* right on the head
i have just had a mileage increase from 14p a mile to 18p
but iguess i need more now, where will it stop
(not the tweenies clock!)

and gas will go up soon....

|
I just feel smug paying only 40p a litre for LPG. Mind you my Range Rover does only manage 12mpg!

\"Nothing less than 8 cylinders will do\"
|
How much is LPG going to go up eventually?
I drove past a Shell Petrol Station today where LPG was on sale at 34.9p a Litre!! Unleaded was 82.9p .
|
Got back from Lancaster about an hour ago. Won't name the garage but unleaded 92.9p!!!
I know - I'm sad

Eventually LPG will undoubteldy be taxed the same as petrol, so will cost the same.
Tony's cronies won't be able to keep their hands off it for long!
