Petrol Consumption - H Reg Fiesta - CharlieD
Hey there,

Im new here so hello to everyone!!!

I own an H Reg Fiesta LX 1.1 - which suits me just fine! Its a good little runner with a good history.

I am looking to find out what type of Petrol i should use for best MPG for my car, i have noticed that when i buy fuel from Tesco i get very low MPG but Esso Unleaded seems to get me further. I am a complete newbie on this matter. I know there are different grades of fuel. But what should i be looking for, for my car?

Also i know there are probably mechanics on this site. I have a quick question. In my Fiesta the fuel gauge is only accurate when i leave it for ages with the ignition on. Is there anyway to improve the reliablilty of the reading while in travel, or shall i just live with it.

thanks for any help

Cheers
charlie

Hi mate - welcome to the BR.

Can't really help you with the consumption issue but the gauge does the same as my fiesta. When I braked, the gauge used to actually increase noticably. Does yours?

I put this down to car - I don't see anything you could do to solve this really although I could be proved wrong.

Welcome!

I've chosen to live with the dodgy fuel gauge in my 1984 Ford Capri 2.8i, not least because it's a pig to fix what's probably making it unreliable. This is a car that I restored to the road after 13 years in my garage (the full story is elsewhere in the Forum), and it is a fact that the gauge has become more reliable as I use the car more and more. I always fill up to the brim; I know what I can get out of a tankful, so I zero the trip meter when I fill up and I know that I should look for a filling station when it gets up around 300 miles, even if the gauge is fibbing.

Views on fuel vary widely, but Honest John himself has been firmly recommending Shell and Texaco for years; somewhere on the site you'll probably find out why (detergent additives, etc.). I take notice of him and buy nothing but Shell, which I note is usually competitive price-wise. Your car will be perfectly happy on nothing more exotic than regular unleaded, so don't be tempted by Optimax and its equivalents.

Happy motoring.

dont forget that all petrol stations have different fuel prices so look for the one where you are going to get cheaper fuel.
