My wife,s 2002 ford focus 1600 cooling fans are running continuously even when the engine is cold. The fans always start up a few seconds after the engine is started. Have tried disconnecting switch on radiator, but this just stops one of the fans. Any suggestions? Thanks

I am going to ask an incredible ridiculous question and I am very sorry for asking it but is the aircon off? I only ask because I have it on all the time and mine does the same. Turn it off, few seconds later, you hear a clunk (some air con clutch or something) and the fans turn off.
If it isn't this, then please just ignore me :-)

If the car has aircon which is switched on,or if windscreen defrost is selected, then cooling fans will run continuously upto a road speed of 60 kph.(sorry ,I`m a bit confused ,there is no switch on rad for cooling fans;they are controlled by engine management ECU.)

Thanks have just tried car, fans only operate when screen defrost is selected, so it looks like there is no fault. Thanks everybody for advice.

I don't get this. Why would Ford want the radiator cooling fans to come on when the heated screen is operated? If the windscreen is frosty, then it's freezing out and surely the last thing you need is an icy blast of air passing through your radiator when you're trying to warm the engine up, let alone the extra strain on the battery.

You are correct DD, this a daft idea. When the defrost is selected the air con is on, even though the air con light stays off. This is silly because most people can decide whether to put their air con on or off.

While the engine is warming up, the engine thermostat is closed, therefore running the fans won't affect engine warm up significantly.
The air con is switched in automatically to dry the air as mentioned in another post in this thread.
The fans run to cool the condenser, which will get warm during a/c operation.

The fan of my 1.8 Focus started to run continuously, even when its cold with the air con and heated windscreen off. The engine seems to get hot very quickly, but the temp gauge always reads normal... Then today, the bonnet started steaming, as the moisture on it burnt off even though the car had only been running for 5 mins. Does anyone elses Focus have no underbonnet felt lining, mine doesnt yet my old Escort did.

Mine does - and it's the 1.8 too.

I'm not 100%, but I suspect that when you put auto defost on for the wimdscreen, it automatically switches on the a/c, as this dehumidifies the air, to this in turn aids in the clear vision you will achive by preventing it steaming up on the inside.
