My Golf has developed a problem where it vibrates when travelling at high speed. This problem only occurs in 4th gear when accelerating. As soon as i change into 5th the vibrations stop. It is also smooth running in 1st, 2nd and 3rd. Any ideas?

how old is you gti, and where do you feal the vibes? through wheel or gearstick?
|
It is a 92 mark 2 golf. It is more through the wheel than anywhere else but they do get quite noticable as it feels like the whole car is shaking!

Are you sure it is related to the gear you are in? It is much more common for vibrations to come and go with speed. Try doing the same speed, but in different gears.
I would check the balance of the front wheels, and inspect the driveshafts, to ensure they are secure and straight before considering anything more \'exotic\'

I guess youre probably doing 60-70 0dd mph in fourth and revving a bit.Try doing the same revs in another gear and if the judder appears, check your engine/exhaust mounts, check visually,(with help of a mate) by keeping brakes on and let out clutch, try to get same amount of revs up without stalling, and have a look in to see/hear whats going on.Hopefully its just a mount needed, fairly cheap from german and sweedish.www.gsfcarparts.com
