1992 Escort 1.4 - Quick Oil Question - escort man
Hi,

Engine of the above car (CVH) is leaking a very small amount of oil. Cant totally see where its coming from as it is very small, but there is oil on the underside of the engine, and a few drops on the drive way.

Im currently using 5W30, but its due for a change now.
Would changing the grade to 10W40 have any effect on the leak, as its a thicker oil?

Im not worried about it, just wondering as the oil is going to be changed anyway.

Cheers,
Dave

I would use 10W40 anyway in one of these engines, not the zetec stuff (5W30), as the 10W40 is more suited to a CVH as the tolerances aren't so tight. It wont really make a difference to the leak though, these tend to leak from the oil switch, get it checked, its not much!

Hi there , I agree the oil your using is too thin, your using zetec oil. Another common oil leak on the CVH engine is the distributor to head oil seal also the cam cover cork gasket, Two very easy jobs to do.

The engine in that car is pretty accessible - if you care enough, clean it off with Gunk from Halfords and a (low pressure) hose, then you'll be able to see where the oil's leaking from.

In my case (same engine but from '89) it was leaking from the rocker cover. New gasket cost less than £3. :-) Not a drop has leaked since.

Hi,

thanks for all for the replys.

the rocker cover gasket was changed yesterdy with the mot as it was leaking apparantly.

ill switch to 10W40 (when the weather dries up!) and see if it makes a difference.

cheers,
Dave

I'm using a 10-40 in son's 1.1 fiesta with no problems (after new rocker cover gasket stopped leaks yesterday!)
