Bull bars. Current situation? - henry k
Has the fad for fitting bull bars to new vehicles almost run its course?

My impression is that I see fewer vehicles with them fitted.
Still too many on older vehicles!

The oddest sight was bull bars on a Smart car.

Are cheese graters on side lights no longer thought to be trendy? I hope so.

What is the impression in your area?

Same as yours, Henry. They do seem to have died the death.

Lets hope fog lights at dusk are the next thing to become uncool.

Then rhinocerouses on spare wheel covers. For some reason they irritate me intensely.

Before I go though: I did used to find the one on the fuel injected model quite amusing. 'Rhino Injection', with the Rhino ... ahem ... gettin' it ooooon.
But then I was about 14 at the time, so found such things to be the epitomy of humour.
OK, now I'm going.

Hansard:

23 Jun 1997 : Column 1427

"..the noble Viscount's comments about motorcyclists and bull bars. However, I am certain that a great many pedestrians are extremely concerned about the dangers posed to them, and in particular to child pedestrians, by an unnecessary and aggressive addition to many cars.

"The Earl of Courtown: My Lords, will the Minister tell me what is the difference between being hit by a 4 x 4 with a bull bar and a 4 x 4 without a bull bar at, for example, 30 miles per hour?

"Baroness Hayman: My Lords, the Transport Research Laboratory assessed that the increased risk of severe injury with a car that had bull bars was 21 per cent."

tinyurl.com/5uspk (September 2003) includes:

"Most manufacturers in the UK no longer sell vehicles fitted with bull bars even though there is no legislation to enforce this.

"However, bull bars can still be bought and fitted second hand. They are a problem because they dramatically increase the chance of injury for pedestrians in the event of a road traffic accident."

I saw a 4 x4 the other day with not bull bars but a set of bull horns (as in Highland Cattle - not horns as in parp parp) with sharp looking points facing forward. This is in the Wild West of Sussex --- WHY?

Rhetorical question, right?

Locally, many pick-ups and 4x4's have after-market fitted bullbars. I'd guesstimate that maybe - like in Uk - 99% of these fitments are unjustified!
However, they are quite often cheaper-than-OE and don't conform to manufacturers standards and fitting recommendations.
One of the biggest problems with a non-standard (Normally decked out with spotlamsps, fishing rod holders, etc etc) is that it can seriously disrupt airflow into the engine, and many failures have been attributed to overheating caused by them.
In fact, there have been a few widely-publicised cases between customers and auto manufacturers, where the manufacturer has proven that the customer was at fault for fitting the bars, pointing out a fair few clauses in the owners' handbook! (don't make modifications, don't obstruct airflow etc etc)
Once again, RTFM wins!

I cannot fit bull bars to my Rang Rover because it interferes with the operation of the airbag sensors. Says so in the handbook.

One good thing about bull bars is they serve as a quick identifier as to pink fluffy dice on the road .
I was driving home last night at about 1900 , serious twilight , on a country road , spotted coming towards me , an Amazon or a Mitsubishi 5 litre diesel battleship- type of thing, consuming major amounts of energy to propel a mega bull bar on the front , which had attached to it about 6 various lights to supplement the installed ones .Strangely as the twonk driving didn\'t seem to realise ,driving as he was on just the tiny parking lights ,he was managing to break the law by having his car under-illuminated .
Is there a correlation between people who fit bull bars , and having :
Knicker blinds in your lounge
A door bell that plays a tune
That strange phoney lead glaxing people put on their windows
We must be told!
